carbs?which one?

I have a '68 Mustang that is my daily driver. It has a 289 and C-4 with 2.73:1 gears in back. I have an Edelbrock 289 Performer manifold with an Edelbrock 600 cfm carb. The car idles well, accelerates great and is fun to drive. When I keep my foot out of it I get 16 to 17 mpg.

I bought the Mustang in '86 and immediately replaced the stock 2-bbl manifold and carb with the Edelbrock 289 Performer and a Holly 600 cfm carb. I replaced the carb in '90 because I couldn't keep it in tune. I replaced the second Holly last year for the same reason. Time will tell if the Edelbrock carb stays in tune better.

Unless you want to run in the higer RPM bands I would stay away from the 302 Performer RPM manifold. The 289 Performer is great for daily driving. The manifold and carb should each be in the $200 range if bought new.

Check out the Holly and Edelbrock web pages for the specs of these items. I bought my Edelbrock carb from Summit Racing and they sent me the model 1400 carb. I was't aware that there were different models available so I trusted their phone salesman. I should have gotten the model 1406 carb. The model 1400 is designed for smog legal chevys and only has timed vacuum ports. The model 1406 is a general use carb and has both timed and full vacuum ports.

Good luck.

The 600 cfm Edelbrock is supposed to be less tempermental than the Holleys. This is actually a Weber carb with Edelbrock's stamp. However, talk to Edelbrock and really get their tech opinion on the right manifold and carb. They know their applications better than a reseller. I also got a little bum advice from Summit that was clarified by Edelbrock. Summit is good to work with, though, and that's a good place to purchase your new hi-performance pieces.

Edelbrock is the way to go. I have been running the 1406 (600cfm electric choke) for three years know and no problem

Ditto on the Edelbrock 1406 with the edelbrock manifold. They are installed on my 67 289 with c4. The carb runs good right out of the box. Then you can easily tune it to match your engine and driving habits. John
