Now I know that I can put a power steering cooler on my bronco, but I am looking to cure the problem, not hide it. My power steering is not working when my bronco is hot. Give it a little gas to bump the RPM.s and it will work. The fluid level seems fine. What should I look for. I am pretty sure it is the pump, but is there something else to help me make sure before I start replacing parts. Everything is stock.
Does the pump make excessive noise? (I know, its a Ford OEM pump, they rolled out of the factory whining). The fluid may just be old enough to be losing viscosity when the system heats up. If the pump does whine excessively it may be time to replace or upgrade to a Saginaw unit instead of the Ford pump. Do a search on the Saginaw swap if you are inclined to do it. There has been much discussion on the topic.
OK I tried chanigng the fluid, and no luck. I even cleaned the makeshift power steering cooler ford mounted to make sure it dispersed as much heat as posible. No luck. I would like to be sure it is the pump and not the gear box. Any Ideas???
I just replaced our leaking steering box and changed out the pump at the same time. The replacement pump whines like crazy and seems to have air bubbles in the fluid. Anyone have ideas about getting rid of the air and whine? Also heard that the older pumps use tranny fluid. Whats the truth to that?
