So, this is funny - I went to Autozone yesterday to get some supplies to change the diff and tranny oils - and I asked them what recommended fluids were for both - they said that regular engine oil was recommended for the tranny! Is it just me, or is that weird?!?!

My 1975 Ford Service Manual sez to use "SAE-50 engine oil" (above 0F and "SAE-30 engine oil below 0F") in the transmissions and transfer cases etc (all except the axles and the Ford 3 speed). 50 weight engine oil is the same viscosity as 90 weight gear oil... they do something different in the two tests so end up with different numbers but really mean about the same "thickness". (or something like that ;) (read that in the popular science when I was a kid, ok?;)
I've read in a couple places, and the sources really should know... that GL-5 has stuff in it that attacks (however slowly I don't know) the brass parts in a T18 and so you're supposed to use GL-4, not GL-5.
I use GL-5 in my T18 anyway. YMMV :)
Friction modifier is needed with any brand LSD;) Ford used.
Just been down that road with Mobil1 gear oil and my Ford 9inch with Traction-Loc.
It sez on the Mobil1 bottle it's good for limited slip differentials as if it doesn't need a modifier. Salesmen/marketing wrote what's on the bottle not automotive engineers. :)

ps- I don't know where this post is going to go :/
Last night I finished rebuilding a 4-speed T19 transmission and used I used an GL-4 oil to fill it, specifically 75W90, as I had read in previous posts that it was better than the GL-5 oils (which are recommended for LSD differentials). Could somebody verify whether or not the GL-5 oils damage (sooner or later) the brass synchros in transmissions like T18, T19 etc.? Thanks, Raul
