Off Topic....I could bank that your an ******, so stop talkin **** on my friends.Where do you get 650rwhp = 800Chp? You must have one hell of a horrible drive train to lose over 150hp to your trans....Ive never heard of it. Anyway I think the 390 might have been 320 hp but back in those days they underrated motors to comply with regulations... Pontiac was the instigator of all that in daytona back in the 50's. Anyway I dont know what PSE is so why dont you enlighten me....but im sure it really doesnt matter anyway.
You opinion means very little to me...but here goes anyway genius!
I am not talking any ++++ on your "friends".
I am using a factor of 20% on drivetrain loss which is very conservative....I guess you know nothing about this!!
And for the tenth time, this thread/question is about Fords RATED HP..NOT about how under rated they may have been!
I might be wrong but maybe fomocofan is referring to Paul Bedoian's "Pro-Stock Engineering" (maybe not). Some people think Paul was a gifted but arrogant genius, and believe he designed & manufactured in house all of the parts he sold. Other people say Paul just bought parts made by other companys & re-boxed them in his boxes. A guy on another site said he bought a "PSE made" aluminum water pump for a Cleveland. What he got was a Weiand pump with the name machined off (but the Weiand part number was still on the pump).
I called Paul back in the '80's inquiring about his tall valve covers & stud girdle for a Cleveland. He told me that he designed & made all his stuff. His covers & girdle sure looked like Moroso's stuff, & he kinda made it sound like Moroso coppied his design. I don't know which side of the Paul Bedoian story is true, but I went with the Moroso stuff (cost less).
If this is not what fomocofan meant by "PSE", maybe someone else has a guess for this contest (LOL).
DING-DING-DING
We have a winner!!
Paul was the ultimate A-hole (you guys think I'm bad...)
But, back in the day he was the ONLY game in town for FE's...if you wanted a race single plane aftermarket intake you had no choice..
He was also the first to make the billet rocker shafts and stands.
I'm surprised Paul actually explained any of that to you...the Paul I knew would have just hung up the phone!
Its something like Precision or Performance specialty Engneering?
I dont remember.... I had one of there Tunnel Rams for my FE...I had a Pic in my Gallery of it..I cant remember if I took it out or not? Since I know longer have the Intake anymore....
Russ
Glad to see you cant just read my posts....
Dave just gave you the answer and you STILL dont know....LOL
Thanks for the info. Didn't expect my question to start a conflict. The engine is actually a 390gt. I saw the 325hp and 335hp numbers in a few books and on the web. I know that those numbers aren't written in stone, but I figured one of them was possibly right. I just like to know facts about stuff like that, I wouldn't notice a 10hp difference anyways.
You can bank on it NOT being "atleast 325hp"....LOL
Well I hate to say it but for once Fomoco was correct and RapidRuss was wrong.......... The hp ratings for 68 390's was 265 (2bbl 9.0 to 1 compression) 275 (2 bbl 10.5 to 1 compression) and 320 ( GT390) These were all car applications, I'm not sure they even put 390's in trucks in 68.
In 68 you could order a 240 six @ 150hp,300 six @ 165hp, 360 eight @ 215hp or a 390 @ 255hp. 360 / 290 hp @ 4,400 rpm's.
Russ, with that short wheel base you must of had your hands full at the drags,
like a Altered on a budget.
.....=o&o>.....

The truck 390s were all 255hp @ 4400.
The 391s were 235hp @ 4000.
428 motors were:
345hp @ 4600 - 4V (standard motor)
335hp @ 5200 - CJ
360hp @ 5400 - PI
Standard 428 motor had the same heads as the 390 as did the PI motor.
CJ was 335hp @ 5200 but the auto trans motors shifted at 6000 all by themselves in Drive and on a chassis dyno at 6000 made better than 335hp at the rear wheels (at least that's what both of my stock CJ motors dyno'd at). My 1966 425hp 427CID motor @ 6000 had 5hp more at the rear wheels than the CJ motor did (I was working at the shop and was involved in the dyno runs and saw the numbers).
How come I was left out of pissing match? I feel slighted.
There were 2 different 390 2bbl motors in 68 in cars. No doubt about that. I've had both. Pulled a 9 to 1 out of a 68 Galaxie and my 68 Merc was a 10.5 to 1, 2 bbl 390. The low comp motor was 265 hp, the high comp was 10 more. These two cars were built a week apart. And actually there were 4 total 390's in 68 cars. You can add the 4bbl 10.5 to 1 motor to the list. Same parts as the GT motor but smaller cam. Ditto for the high comp 2 bbl motor, again, same parts as both 4 bbl engines but just equipped with a 2 bbl intake and carb and same cam as the std 4 bbl 390.
Bear; they have pills for that you know, also beer is considered doping like in the Tour De France, if caught doping (beer) your DQ ed. Altering line pressure is a another no no. Rules also apply for young and old alike. Those with short hoses are allowed to put out the first light for a better pee action time.
This would also bump women out of the competition as they would be penalized for wetting down the track every time. Sorry couldn't resist.

All the premium fuel (10.5 to 1) 2V engines were in the Mercurys.
And yeah Carl the V8 powered tup..was a hand full it had a wheel base ?? like a VW...LOl.. It was a mild steel chassis...and only broke the scales at 2250...and I ran an econo motor in it..
The Car was mostly put together for Exhibition ....And we got paid for just showing up at different tracks... Show and go... Or just show..we really didnt have to run..But I like to smoke the tires and put on a good show for the Spectator's...and I enjoyed the hell out out of that!!! Made me feal like I was earning my money?? LOL..
