Russ; seems we ran about the same circles, I went to AMES Research for 8 years, then worked Test stand with 2800 Pratt's then back into comercial aircraft again. still have a yellow aluminum Triplett slide rule in the garage, hell we had to use one in chemistry back when life was simple. I bet we would of had some good times drag racing if we met back in the 70's. Fremont Drag Strip was 23 miles south of Alameda. What do I know, old and slow with a heavy right foot that still enjoys a green light "LETS GO" street drag. Pisses off the old lady at times but can't help myself. Dad was the same way, a gene thing.
How would your Fiat rate against this modern Ford PU that posted in the "10's"?

BTW, My 4800 lb Lightning makes 650 hp at the rear wheels( and I have the dyno sheet right here )...that is well over 800 hp at the crank..it takes a ton of hp to get a brick moving that fast!

Please, with all fun and games over with, this is a great forum where we self regulate ourselves without the moderators stepping in. Again, name calling doesn't resolve anything, lets play fair guys.

Off Topic....I could bank that your an ******, so stop talkin **** on my friends.Where do you get 650rwhp = 800Chp? You must have one hell of a horrible drive train to lose over 150hp to your trans....Ive never heard of it. Anyway I think the 390 might have been 320 hp but back in those days they underrated motors to comply with regulations... Pontiac was the instigator of all that in daytona back in the 50's. Anyway I dont know what PSE is so why dont you enlighten me....but im sure it really doesnt matter anyway.

Also what is the correct hp rating for a 68 390 I have seen 2 325hp and 335hp?

Thanks, Jason
This outfit might help, you can contact them. I could only find a '63 chart for any real specs.
http://www.lovefords.org/archives/

As I recall, 390s had several ratings in cars. 2bbl 265 horse, Tbirds 300, 320 in a Mustang, maybe 335 in the Fairlane in '66-67. That site also shows a 280 horse premium fuel 2bbl 390 in '69 Mercurys.

This site,
http://www.musclecarclub.com/musclecars/ford-galaxie/ford-galaxie-history.shtml

has '68 390s at 270, 320 and 335 in a Galaxie.

Unless you are going to restore this engine to it's 1968 glory with all the original parts, it matters little.

HP ratings prior to the early '70s were "gross" hp, without accessories or exhaust or aircleaner etc. And, as indicated, they were tweaked to fool the insurance man. Thus, both Ford and Chev rated their 302's at 290 hp. Right.
And the 428 CJ, which was a 428 with 427 parts, at 335. Closer to 435 probably.

So, a 1968 HP rating doesn't mean much at this point. For example, Ford 390s, Plymouth 383s, Pontiac 389s and some Chev 396s were rated about the same--325 or so. But sadly, 390s were the pooch of the bunch. Was Ford optimistic or were the others sandbagging?

Anyway, you can build your 390 into a firebreather today with just a modest budget for heads, cam, manifold, everything that rolls or reciprocates....

Good luck.

I might be wrong but maybe fomocofan is referring to Paul Bedoian's "Pro-Stock Engineering" (maybe not). Some people think Paul was a gifted but arrogant genius, and believe he designed & manufactured in house all of the parts he sold. Other people say Paul just bought parts made by other companys & re-boxed them in his boxes. A guy on another site said he bought a "PSE made" aluminum water pump for a Cleveland. What he got was a Weiand pump with the name machined off (but the Weiand part number was still on the pump).

I called Paul back in the '80's inquiring about his tall valve covers & stud girdle for a Cleveland. He told me that he designed & made all his stuff. His covers & girdle sure looked like Moroso's stuff, & he kinda made it sound like Moroso coppied his design. I don't know which side of the Paul Bedoian story is true, but I went with the Moroso stuff (cost less).

If this is not what fomocofan meant by "PSE", maybe someone else has a guess for this contest (LOL).
