As soon as my truck gets back from getting it's new transmission next week, i'm planning on redoing my cab or at least starting. Once i repair the floor, it's getting painted and Dynamatted, I also want to put Dynamat under the headliner. But i figure while it's down, is there a way to dye it to match the color of the rest of the interior, like a blueish?
I dont know about dying it, but i have seen the colored vinyl ones on the higher end trucks. Mine has a tan one and i have seen another tan one and a green one in the wrecking yard so maybe a blueo one can be found.
I painted mine black with the same paint I used on the door panels. It's Duplicolor something or other and is intended to paint over plastic and vinyl and bond to the surface. I had a friend who just used Krylon spray paint and he was quite happy with it. Only issue is getting it to stick well to the metal trim around the headliner. You may have to lightly sand it to get it to stick. I'm sure there are other higher-end, more expensive ways to do it, but this worked for me.
Another option is to reupholster the headliner. It is easy to do. Get some fabric/vinyl/velour that you like and cover the headliner. For a 'custom' look -put a layer of foam rubber between the 'liner and fabric. Buttons or ?? can be used insetting into the foam.Like your favorite chair for watching Football. It's just a matter of how far you want to go
I have a light blue 79 f150 custom explorer with the medium/dark blue interior. I'm currently doing a complete interior overhaul including repainting the dash. I decided to get the felt type headliner material that pretty much every vehicle has now. I ordered my kit from www.stockinteriors.com. Their medium blue is a perfect match to my interior although it is a bit lighter than my stock painted blue paperboard headliner. It came with the spray adhesive. My stock headliner board is ok so it will become the backer for the felt. I looked around for perforated vinyl/leatherete but I couldn't find any in a good color match so I went with the felt.
I went to Lowes and got a roll of that shiny surfaced thin insulation they sell for things like hot water heaters. I'm going to put it above the headboard for insulation/sound deadner.
I think it would be best to use some of that wafer board or pressed board if you need to replace the stock board. You can use the old board as a template and cut it with a jig saw.
