I've just started my parts quest for for my 64 f100 shortbed stepside. I found a pretty nice used original tailgate for $100. Is this a good price? I have not had time to research this yet... none on ebay. I figured you guys might have a quick answer.
Thanks!
Is it a correct 64 to 66 tailgate? if so 100 bucks is an awesome deal.
New Incorrect for 64 to 66 can be had for 400.00. Made by Dennis Carpenter from original ford tooling. (they fit and look similar but purists frown on it..LOL)
Thanks Garbz,
I know the brand new ones are high so I was hoping this was a good deal! I have only seen a picture of the truck it's on and it is a 64... doesn't look like the truck has been worked on much so I assume the guy is correct that it's original. My bed is in pretty good shape exept for some fender rust just below the steps. I'm hoping I can fix it without replacing the fenders.
Thanks again!
Fastest way to tell a wrong tailgate from a right one is if it has a raised "ring" around the letters. The correct tailgate has plainer letters, and NO ring.
He is asking about a stepside. Ford used the same bed from 1953-76. The tailgates were the same all those years. Make sure it is a shortbed though. The longbed used a wider-taller bed and gate. The shortbed tailgate is available as a reproduction.
