My dad just backed the 01 f350 tailgate into a tree today, it is totally destroyed, im surpirised it even closes. Plan is to take my tailgate off my 05, and replace mine with an 08 tailgate.
I have two questions:
1. what do i have change on my truck to make the 08 tailgate work?
2. anyone know where i can get one for a good price? need a white one. im going to be checking local junkyards.
Should be lots of white ones around, check truck outfitter stores. You will need to replace the drivers side hinge point, will probably have to order that from ford I think then get it painted
Shouldn't have to change anything, and there was a guy on here selling newer 08+ tailgates for $450. Use the search and you should see his thread somewhere

The 08 and newer tailgates have a torsion bar inside of them that on the drivers side has to slide over a solid mounting point to function properly. 07 and earlier just have the cup that the tail gate slides right into, this setup will not work on the newer tailgates, tailgate will just be flopping around on the drivers side.
To make it fit, u remove the old style hinge point on the lower left. its only two torx bolts. Buy the new and paint as stated b4. Its not gonna be all that noticable so paint does not have to be great. Its not very much fo the hinge. It will bolt in the same place as the old one with the torx bolts. If u match it to where the old one was, it will fit the same way.
I might can get u an 08 takeoff for aroun 400 but getting it from north ga to central fl will be an issue. Its been stored but pretty much brand new. Its white with super duty on it. The body line will follow the seams at the bottom of the tailgate.
I put one on my 2000 model and that is all it took to make it fit. If u drive with the tailgate down, the least little bump will make it flop b.c of the spring assist in the new tailgates.

I got to check this out.. my 08 Job 1 step tailgate doesn't feel like there is any torsion bar. very heavy to lift to close..
Check out the local shops in your town that install those Johnny Lifts and lift gates as they usually have tons of white ones and cheap too. I am heading out sat to visit them and see what they have...
