Question Gears?

I just got an 06 STX V6 with a 5 speed manual 2 wheel drive. and i noticed that when you drop the clutch or accelerate hard the rearend bunny hops and leaves patchs. The best gears i could get factory were 3.55:1 and i was wondering if a 3.90:1 or maybe some 4.10's. it has 275/55R20 wheels and tires right know.

Question

can my truck be regeared, and what gears are available. I guessing it is the same rearend as even an FX4 5.4 would have.

Yes you can be re-geared, 3.73, 4.10, 4.30, 4.56 and more are available. Here's a link to give you a better idea.

Question

I looked at the vin tag on the inside of my door and it said that the axle had the code "19". What does that mean?

The links I posted answer your question. The 19 means 3.55 Non-LS.

I am well aware it has a 3.55 regular rearend in it I figured that out when I bought it. I stated that when I first posted. I don't know which ford rearend is in it, for example a ford 9" is a specific rearend. You can't stick Dana 60 gears in a ford 9". Which rearend came in these trucks?

You have the Ford 8.8 rear if you have the V-6. The only way to get the bigger 9.75" rear is with the 5.4L V8. Just curious as to why you would want to go with taller gears? For the 4.2L, the 3.55 puts the motor pretty much in its power band.

I figured the taller gears would help even more with the low end since it won't break the tires lose very well unless I drop the clutct then it wraps up the axle and bunny hops. I sure there are higher gear ratios available for the 8.8.

Plus I have 275/55R20 wheels and tires which I believe are about 32 inches tall.

Actually, lower gears (higher numeric) will allow you to spin the tires more easily. Your problem is a) dumping the clutch b) accelerating rapidly. There is not enough weight in the rear of these trucks to allow a decent hookup. Compound that with not so sticky truck tires on 20" rims, you are asking for axle wrap.

It is an 8.8" rearend. You can get gears 3.73, 3.90, 4.10, 4.56 etc. etc.

Talking

Yes the tires and wheels are aftermarket and the measure out to 31 inches and some change. The truck has about 1500 miles 20 of those on the tires and wheels

It already takes off prety hard very surprising for a V6. I wanted the gears in case I do want to do a burn out. I'm sick of the axle wrap up.

A friend of mine has a little 1994 mazda b4000 4X4 with the 4.0 and a 5 speed, and that thing will smoke the tires. It also has 31 all season tires on it. I believe it is because of his gears because my 4.2 has more torque and hp. One thing I have noticed is that the new little rangers have mostly 4.10 gears. Sometimes a little 2wd will have 3.73 with the auto.
