I just looked up the specs on my tranny and it said that I have a 3.90:1 1st gear. I was wondering if that is a respectible low or is is a ratio you would find is a mustang or other car.

Dude, you drive a truck! Your tranny is designed for a truck. It has a lower first than a car. I don't understand this whole thing about trying to compare the performance of your basically stock truck to a Mustang. I'm not trying to be a d1ck, but come on, compare apple to apples.

Now, I just traded my 03 Mustang GT for my 04 F-150 STX. Same 4.6L engine. I had 4.10 gears in the stang, this truck, 3.55. The stang came with 3.27 gears stock. In it's stock form, the Mustang would murder any 4.6L, stock F150, period.

WHAT THE HE!! ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? You must have read the wrong thread. Let me interperate; I was talking about comparing the 1st gear ratios thats it!! No rearend ratios or motors to a mustang. Nobody will catch me trying to chirp gears against a stang! I am well aware its a truck, I noticed that from the 6.5ft. bed hanging off the back. I know they aren't built the same.

1979fordf250, i but stiffer control arms on my mustangs to control axle wrap. i found that to be the cheapest way of going. you can prolly find a way of making this work on your truck. no the mustangs control wont but maybe something made at home. you need some downward thrust over the axles when you take off. i assume you already know this. as to your question about 1st gear i could'nt find the gears in my mustangs repair manua so i cant answer that.l

Thanks for the idea, but I was thinking about ladder bars, and I was hoping that if I lowered the back end that it might come with stiffer leaf springs that won't wrap up on me.

From what I can tell I think I have a 3.55 LS but would be nice to know for sure. Any help would be great

You could check on the rear diff. There is a metal tag attached to a bolt and the gearing is imprinted on the metal tag.

He's right I found the two tags on the differencial the other day. One says the gears that you have and what differencial size. The other says the date it was manufactured or something like that.

I did know about the tags on the axle but I was all cleaned up after being dirty all day and did not feel like crawling under the pickup so I was being lazy and hoping someone had an answer the lazy way. Thanks for your help though, I will just have to crawl under there after work tomorow.

"Usually" if the axle code has a letter in it, it is LS. Your code is all numbers, so I don't think yours is LS. I'll work on decoding the number if I can get time.

Well I crawled under and could not get a ratio size but I found a tag saying
V956F on it. And I am pretty sure I have the 3.55 due to my rpm on the interstate and I checked on dry pavement and burnt a layer off of my new Bridgestones and there were two marks from some expensive rubber. Oh well love the pickup regardless and I get great mpg. So I am better then fine and if you are right you will agree.
