Cam question

I have a 76 250 2wd with a 390. (4 barrel holley, stock) I have to be honest, I drive it like I stole it, and it just loves the attention. I rev it high, and I enjoy the very even torque curve, but it has a 4 spd with granny and 3.73 rear gears. I want to get a new cam with gobs of top end power, but I don't want to have horrible flat spots in my acceleration. It's been a while since I looked at cams, so could domeone help me out, what am I looking for?

Sneak - what are your intentions with the rest of the motor, or are you just looking to drop in a cam? The 76 truck 390 was relatively low on compression, you will kill the motor with any of these grinds.... We need to know what the plan is to recommend anything remotely correct.

Well, I would like to end up with a clark 280 series five speed, put tri-y headers on it, true duel, and maybe a Holley 750, but all this would happen over maybe two or three years. It only has 103k miles on it, original. I know that the correct cam could really wake this engine up, and that one not too far off could really kill it.

I was thinking at the biggest, something like this This.

<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" onmouseover="this.style.backgroundColor='#f5f5f5'; " onmouseout="this.style.backgroundColor='#FFFFFF'"> <td class="overview-c1" width="25%">Brand:</td><td class="overview-c2" width="75%">COMP Cams</td></tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" onmouseover="this.style.backgroundColor='#f5f5f5'; " onmouseout="this.style.backgroundColor='#FFFFFF'"> <td class="overview-c1" width="25%">Product Line:</td><td class="overview-c2" width="75%">COMP Cams Xtreme Energy Cam and Lifter Kits</td></tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" onmouseover="this.style.backgroundColor='#f5f5f5'; " onmouseout="this.style.backgroundColor='#FFFFFF'"> <td class="overview-c1" width="25%">Cam Style:</td> <td class="overview-c2" width="75%">Hydraulic flat tappet</td> </tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" onmouseover="this.style.backgroundColor='#f5f5f5'; " onmouseout="this.style.backgroundColor='#FFFFFF'"> <td class="overview-c1" width="25%">Basic Operating RPM Range:</td> <td class="overview-c2" width="75%">1,300-5,600 RPM</td> </tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" onmouseover="this.style.backgroundColor='#f5f5f5'; " onmouseout="this.style.backgroundColor='#FFFFFF'"> <td class="overview-c1" width="25%">Intake Duration at 050 inch Lift:</td> <td class="overview-c2" width="75%">218</td> </tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" onmouseover="this.style.backgroundColor='#f5f5f5'; " onmouseout="this.style.backgroundColor='#FFFFFF'"> <td class="overview-c1" width="25%">Exhaust Duration at 050 inch Lift:</td> <td class="overview-c2" width="75%">224</td> </tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" onmouseover="this.style.backgroundColor='#f5f5f5'; " onmouseout="this.style.backgroundColor='#FFFFFF'"> <td class="overview-c1" width="25%">Duration at 050 inch Lift:</td> <td class="overview-c2" width="75%">218 int./224 exh.</td> </tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" onmouseover="this.style.backgroundColor='#f5f5f5'; " onmouseout="this.style.backgroundColor='#FFFFFF'"> <td class="overview-c1" width="25%">Advertised Intake Duration:</td> <td class="overview-c2" width="75%">262</td> </tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" onmouseover="this.style.backgroundColor='#f5f5f5'; " onmouseout="this.style.backgroundColor='#FFFFFF'"> <td class="overview-c1" width="25%">Advertised Exhaust Duration:</td> <td class="overview-c2" width="75%">270</td> </tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" onmouseover="this.style.backgroundColor='#f5f5f5'; " onmouseout="this.style.backgroundColor='#FFFFFF'"> <td class="overview-c1" width="25%">Advertised Duration:</td> <td class="overview-c2" width="75%">262 int./270 exh.</td> </tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" onmouseover="this.style.backgroundColor='#f5f5f5'; " onmouseout="this.style.backgroundColor='#FFFFFF'"> <td class="overview-c1" width="25%">Intake Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio:</td> <td class="overview-c2" width="75%">0.513 in.</td> </tr> <tr style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" onmouseover="this.style.backgroundColor='#f5f5f5'; " onmouseout="this.style.backgroundColor='#FFFFFF'"> <td class="overview-c1" width="25%">Exhaust Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio:</td> <td class="overview-c2" width="75%">0.520 in.</td></tr></tbody></table>

Edit: I need to put a tach in it to see what my operating rpm's are.

Or maybe THIS.

Edit: Also, does anyone have the specs for the stock cam that came in this engine?

Comp cams 262/270 looks the best so far, do a dyno sim check to see if you can advance it 2-3 degrees. You need to know what compression ratio zone that can works best in and yours.
