Well im looking at camming my 460. I currently have L&L Headers, along with a gibson exhaust. I was searching around for cams and am curious as to quiet what duration, lift, and lobe sloap affect it? What are some good performance cams? I have a 91 F250, and want to use it basiclly want power for the street.
Duration is how long the valves stay open in crankshaft degrees. More duration helps build horsepower but moves the power ranges up in rpm. LIft is the valves lift and more lift is more power. Lobe seperation is the amount of degrees betweem max lift of the exhaust and intake lobes. More lobe seperation reduces overlap and has more engine vaccum. For a street cam something like 112 is ideal. HIgh performance cams have a 106 or 108 lobe seperation. And overlap is when both valves are open at the same time. But the best thing for most people to do is call crane or comp and have them pick you a cam. I like to pick my own.
Comp Cams offers a computer controlled cam for speed density, and it works with the stock computer, it is a hydraulic flat tappet cam. The operating range is 1000 to 5200 rpm's. The camshaft part number is 34-255-5. The camshaft grind number is XE256H-14. The duration @ .050 Intake 212, Exhaust 219. The valve lift with 1.73 rockers Intake .490, Exhaust .495. The lobe separation is 114 degrees. The phone number is 1-800-999-0853, the website address is www.compcams.com.
