Squeaky Distributor?

Anyone know a cure for a squeaky distributor? Topping off the oil level helps, but doesn't quiet all the way. Maybe I should try "Slick 50".

How do you know it's the distributor? I never heard of a squeaky distributor before.

ford dealer in tustin was working on something unrelated and wanted to know what was making that annoying squeak, so they looked into on their own.

If I temporarily remove the serpentine belt and it stops squeaking, we'll know it was probably the water pump bearings going out. We shall see.

An old belt will squeak, I have had to replace my own to stop it in the past.

Wow, it's looking like he was right. The general area that you hear it is near the water pump, yet I started it up with the belt off, and the squeak persisted.

I bet if i replace the distributor it will persist. I suspect it is the gears under the distributor.

before you do that you might want to shoot some wd 30 down into youre distibutor you might have excessive play in the distribotor drive shaft maybe try a dab of oil dont leave any excess though inside the cap the bearings inside the distributor might be needin a little lube Its an idea that might save you some trouble!

the last couple weeks i've aggressively aimed to resolve this. I obtained/installed a new distributor shaft. I changed the oil, made sure it was topped off, included slick 50.

still sqealing, albeit less.

I pulled the shaft and added grease to the gears. That reduced the squealing another 20%. i know it sounds like i'm throwing away good money and too some extent i probably am, but keep in mind, the squeak is just as prevalent with the belt off!

when the engine is hot and idling, it makes no squeak whatsoever. i'm hoping the slick 50 works its way in there and eventually helps. based on what i've researched, the gear drive is less likely to cause this -- people say bushings that the shaft spin in are supposed to be honed to preclude this.
