Here's my plan. Please shoot any holes in it you can. I know there's going to be extra work in putting in the floor shifter and not taking out the clutch while the steering column's out the first time but, due to time constraints (day job, boss, etc.), I can't do both the p/s and a/t jobs at the same time. Plus, I really don't feel comfortable handling a freshly rebuilt C-6 and getting it hoisted into place. Gravity helped get it out of the old truck but it ain't gonna make it jump up into mine.
Some weekend real soon - I remove carpet, cut floorboard, install 3-speed manual shifter.
The next weekend - I remove steering column, replace manual steering with power using steering column for P/S and A/T. Take C-6 to shop for rebuild.
Mid-June - I go on cruise with family while shop removes 3-speed and installs C-6. Shop also shortens drive shaft and mounts cooler. I have drinks with the wife out on deck while we both wonder what our teenage kids might be up to.
When we get home - I remove floor shifter, hook up linkages, remove clutch pedal, patch floorboard, replace carpet.
Dan, Cutting holes in your carpet and floor to install what is planned to be a temporary three speed floor shift is not a good idea. Patching floors, while fun and relaxing, is a pain. And you'll screw up the floormat/carpet. Converting your truck to PS and Auto should not be rushed, I'll guarantee late Sunday night you'll discover you need some part that you don't have and can't get until Monday. You should also consider adding disk brakes on the front if you haven't already. I suggest you borrow/Rent or buy and sell later, some transportation that will get you back and forth to work. Then take a couple of weeks and fix up your old truck and take the time enjoy the process.
Okay, Okay. You guys are shaming me into doing all of it myself in one whack. I can borrow a second floor jack to help balance the tranny on its way up. I really didn't want to cut the floor and put that shifter in anyway. BTW, I definitely was not going to cut the carpet. It's only a couple months old.
Wow, if y'all ever need an opinion, there's no need to ask JOW. He's much too reserved to tell you what he really thinks. John, you gotta work on coming out of that shell.
