just baught a 1994 ford bronco xlt the check engine light comes on and the idle goes up / the trans shifts real hard too hard! any body got a clue whats going on? i didnt give much for it but i want to fix it up.
yes im going to get a code reader a friend said his tps caused hard shifting in histang.but didnt showe up on the code reader ever here of that before?
Ya, the codes don't tell it all. I never had that in my truck before, but have had it in two cars. I was the mass air flow sensor. Caused all sorts of fuel and vacuum issues. Expensive fix ($200). Hope it's not that. Another one of mars also did that, and it was a broken wire at the computer. As you can see, my luck with cars isn't very good.
I am almost 100% sure its your throttle postion sensor (TPS) its located under your throttle body. You should be able to do it yourself. Most shops will charge about $160 to fix. A new TPS costs about $30. I just changed mine out on my 1993 Bronco. It runs perfectly now, shifts great!
You don't even need the code reader for your truck to get the codes. All you need is a way to jump the self test single terminal connector (PURPLE/WHITE) wire and the EEC-IV test connector terminal with the (GREY/RED) wire together. Both are located on the driver's side of the engine bay near the hood spring. Jump these two wires together and turn the key ON. The codes will flash out via the "Check Engine" light. For a complete description of the procedure check www.fordfuelinjection.com or get a Haynes manual for that covers your model year.
Even if you DO buy a code reader, getting the codes from the EEC-IV computer will save you tons of time guessing or replacing components that MIGHT be the problem.
BTW, there are TWO tests that can be administered. KOEO (Key On Engine Off) and KOER (Key On Engine Running). You should run BOTH just in case the problem does not generate a code in one.
thanks greystreak iwas trying to come up with the money to buy a code scanner but this is great thanks every one ive been doing mechanic work for years but got out of it full time some years ago and never really had any formal training just another third generation hillbilly mechanic . but im enjoying this forum thanks again.
