Blower motor not working

Hello all,

I have a 1996 Explorer and the AC\Heater blower will not work with any setting. ie Max AC, AC, Vent, Def, Floor etc.

I have tested the motor itself by putting 12 volts directly to the motor terminals. It runs that way.

I was told to replace the resistor assembly and that did not fix the problem. I also replaced the fan control switch and selector switch in the cab, checked for blown fuses in the cab fuse panel as well as the fuse panel under the hood. No blown fuses in either place.

I had an extra relay, new in the box, so I replaced the AC relay in the engine compartment fuse panel.

Can anyone here offer any tips as to where to look next? I have tested\replaced everything I know to check.

Thanks in advance,

Mike Guidry

If it's wired the same as a 97, it looks like a bad "blower motor relay".

The blower motor relay coil side is wired to the resistor block & switched side to the high speed blower relay.

Take a look at your wiring diagram & be sure that you replaced the right relay.

96 blower circuit

Fuses: F2 in the I/P panel fusebox HOT IN RUN. Provides power to the coil of the BLOWER MOTOR RELAY. The LOW side of the coil is grounded via the MODE selector switch in any position except OFF. The relay is located in the AUXILLARY RELAY BOX # 2 which is located directly behind the passenger side headlight.

When the BLOWER MOTOR RELAY is energized, it routes power from fuse F6 in the underhood power distribution box to one of the blower motor terminals. The other side of the blower motor is either connected to ground via the HIGH SPEED BLOWER RELAY (also in ARB #2), or via the resistor assembly to ground via the MODE switch.

The AC relay is not in this circuit. The resistor assy will not stop the blower from operating in HIGH.

If you need the schematic, I can post it later.

Thanks for the quick reponses,

I found the ARB #2 behind the passenger headlight. I can see some plastic has melted around one of the prongs on the relay as well as around the receptacle.

I replaced the relay itself and it still does not work. I suspect the ARB has been damaged or is shorted. Do you know what readings I should expect to see from the ARB if I test with a volt\ohm meter?

Thanks again guys,
Mike
