i believe my starter is beginning to go bad on mY truck and was wondering if anyone knows any any signs or things i can check other than the noticeable difference in time it takes to turn over....Thanks 62cOLE
Start by cleaning the terminals on the battery and all the cable ends, including the ground between the engine and the chassis. Then do a starter draw test to determine the amp draw. Your manual will give you specs for your truck. (be sure the starter bolts are tight.) Also, when cold, crank the engine till it starts then shut it off. Then put your hand on the starter motor to see if it is very hot. If it gets very hot with just a few seconds cranking it's on it's way out.
When I was experiencing starter problems, My starter would start my truck just fine. My problem was when I would come to a sudden stop it would make a noise like if it was hitting flywheel, I would have to quickly put in neutral rev it up to quiet noise, I have a 1964 f100 292 and ford-o-matic trans. After replacing starter all my problems stopped. (at least for the starter) The advise I got from this site helped me figure out problem. Just one other thing to look for when having starter problems. I would follow advise from Bdox and go from there. It seems like the most problems we have regarding our "Slicks" is bad grounding.
on my starter, it seems to want to kick out before it starts....
turn key and: rawr .. rawr .. roaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrr (starter winding down for 3 or 4 seconds)
luckily it rarely needs more then one turn to start, Does it sound like the bendix going out on mine?
It dont struggle to turn at all, just kicks out as if it has started, especially if its warm and been setting for 15 minutes after driving.
If it ends up that your starter is going to need replaced or rebuilt, I would suggest one of the mini Hi-torque starters. I put one in my 292 and it works great. Since it is so light, installation was much easier too!
thanks for the suggestions on my starter guys...
i have eyeballed those mini's several times, but I will probably just try to fix the one i have for now. that way I can spend some of that $$ on other goodies
That guy told me if it has an older starter without the nose on it, there could be a bushing wearing out on it, and nothing more than a washer basically is needed to fix it. I have not pulled the thing off, so I have no idea what it has yet....
I will stop by napa on my way home from work tomorrow and get new brushes while I am at it.
what truck are you talking about... cause if its the 65 you have listed there then we are in the same boat, and that would make my life a whole lot easier.
