Tick Tick Tick Tick
So I've just finished rebuilding my 88 300, and it runs great, stellar oil pressure, great compression, all that jazz.
But it has a tick. I'm almost positive it is not an exhaust leak, but rather valve train, and I'm not sure what would cause this. When I rebuilt the motor, I had a valve job done, so valves are all reground and should be fine. However I did not replace the rockers or pushrods and I was wondering if something here could cause the tick? Oh, lifters are also brand new.
It's not so much the tick that bothers me; it's not knowing what is ticking that drives me nuts. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Probably worn guides if not.
Any time a valve job is done the valve guides should be serviced first. Kinda like leveling a surveyor's transit before making elevation measurements.
As a side note, The motor I rebuilt was a donor with 116xxx ish miles on it, and I had never heard it run before hand.
Valve guides are all good.
Also, I checked up on what's going on underneath the valve cover and found that the rocker arms were worn. Replaced those then noticed that one of the lifters wasn't filling the rocker arm, popped a new lifter in and problem solved.
But I had a heck of a clatter goin on. Worse than when I started with just a little tick. I try to follow the old doctor's adage of "first do no harm" or something like that, so I'm feelin pretty low.
Anyways, did some more digging and discovered that pushrod number one is bent. The only time I've ever seen a bent pushrod is on a boat when the exhaust manifolds leak water back down into the head. So I'm at a loss; what would cause a bent pushrod? The only thing I can think of is that I had the head shaved .015" and I'm using stock length pushrods...maybe? A friend of mine tried to show me that the rocker bolt took too many turns past zero lash to tighten, but I was under the impression that with an efi head you just torque the rockers down and go.
Anyways, thanks for readin through that, I appreciate all the help!
