i wouldnt use oak... no point.. even particle board does a good job when sealed up correctly. then put the padding crap inside the box to help with echo
I own a building supply so oak and birch are on hand and we dont sell particle board. Secondly, Im staining it to match my headliner which is made from 1/4" oak. Its more for show than functionality. Yeah yeah....Im showing off the walmart speakers I bought...dont want to hear it.
When you're building the box make sure that you use lots of wood glue, don't be stingy. Think of it as the wood glue is what's holding the box together, and the screws you use are there just hold it together while the glue's curing.
Now the padding is to give the subs a solid sound, it absorbs the sustaining (not sure if that's the right word) sound waves.
And personally I don't like ported enclosures, but it really depends on what you want out of this. For the best sound quality a sealed box is the best way to go, but if you're wanting to feel the shaky shaky all through your body (even more) then go ported, but it can be tough to tune it right, so in that case, sealed would probably be the best.
I had my P5 in a sealed box, and would most likely go with that again. As Romer already said you will get better sound quality that way.
I used particle board for the box, then covered it in a grey carpet to match the interior of my (now sold) car. Used WinISD to get the box dimensions. Good luck.
One more question without starting a new post. I bought some Infinity Kappa 6x8 speakers for the dash of my 79. I cant install but one and no room for the other. I had an idea which may be completely misguided but thats what you are for. Since Im only running 1 speaker can I connect both speaker wires from the CD player? What I mean is can I run both the left and the right speaker wire which will put twice the power 50w x 2 to the one speaker? Is this a good idea?
Actually that's a good question. I guess you could run that speaker as a mono-channel. What you would need to do is hook up the left's (-) and the right's (+) to bridge it. However, I don't know if your HU will support it.. it should, but you never know for 100% certainty.
ok so dont hook it up normal where the left has ( - and +) and the right has (- and +) I understand that. How do I know if the CD player will support a bridged speaker?
If it starts smoking you should know you weren't supposed to do it .
Just kidding. If you just have plain speakers I really don't think it will be a problem, if they were DVC (very highly undoubtfull) you could fry something, but you should be fine.
