I had a 2002 that I bought in Dec of 01 traded it in at 89,000 and ,Got my 04 in Nov of 03 drove it to 75,000 and gave it to my 78 year old father to take to Alaska for his ride I had the 4/100 plan on it so he still has 25,000 to go on warranty. Got my 06 PSD Lariat CC on July 4th weekend right now it has 3000 miles on it. I do use my truck to work out of as I have about 1200 lbs in the bed all the time and then tow an equipment trailer when we need to. That can range from 3000 lbs to 12,000 lbs depending on what we stick on the trailer. Will I keep this one for 5 or 10 years? Probably not as the depreciation will be long gone by then and the trade value balance sheet will hit the crossover level somewhere around year 3 (that is where the loan pay off and vehicle trade value are equal). My accountant will also call and tell me I need to spend some money or give it to the government and while uncle sugar is always willing to take he is not so generous about giving when it comes to small business people. So that is why I don't drive my rigs until the wheels fall off it just doesn't make good business sense for me. I take great care of my rigs and am always on my maint. schedule so I never (knock on wood) have had any major problems with the last 3 Ford trucks I have owned and all of them 02 89,000, 04 75,000 (my dad will put 8,000 on it in the next 2 months) and now my PSD 06 3,000 so far have been great if short lived ownership material for me. 06 PSD Lariat White CC 2wd all options but no hole in the roof.
Well, I for one can't believe I had the unmitigated gall to have bought a PSD. I am woefully unqualified to own a diesel truck since I only use it to haul a 26' TT 3 or 4 times a year and to haul my not inconsequential butt back and forth to work the rest of the time. I will go home now, open a bottle of Scotch, and try to find some way to live with the shame.
I know what you mean DeepDoc1 and I sure am happy that someone has our conscience covered...aren't you?
Now when I get home, from my 10 minute drive from the office, I can put her in the drive way, break out a cigar and a really good whiskey drink, sit on the deck and just admire how pretty wasted money looks. Without out one bit of guilty feelings...'cause someone else has my back on that one.
The upgrade from the 5.4 to the diesel is worth every penny over the life of the truck. Mine will sit in the driveway and never touch the road til it's time to haul the boat, go on long drives, or do some work. It will last me forever and I look forward to long hauls while my undeserving *** sits in the leather bucket seat and the diesel just smooths along.
I have a somewhat unique situation. I have a program at work that reimburses me for vehicles. MY 2004 was running out of allotted time, 3 or 4 years. The Harley Davidson was also to nice for my new job. Sooooo, I traded up for an 06 work truck. This truck pushed me into a much higher payout (increased gvw) and lower payment (XL truck). Do I need 3/4 ton? No. A ranger could get around the site. However , I would walk more and have astraunamical repair costs. The f150s don't last longer than a year. So, I believe a 3/4 ton is the best way to go, mostly because of the drivetrain and suspension. The SD is still running well and looks new (when I clean it). Also the 3/4 ton yields much higher payout than 1/4 and 1/2 ton truck and maintain resale better. Therefore, I make more money at work when I own 3/4 tons (maximize NPV strategy). Operating costs are higher, but mileage is reimbursed and fuel is cheaper. I will keep this 06 if the body and frame stays tight. The motor will be fine, the tranny will be stressed. The suspension, exhaust and paint will be shot. What a perfect candidate for a dedicated offroad truck.
You'd really be surprised how much truck you get with an XL for the money. It's no wonder you have to special order them and that the dealer won't stock them because they are 10K less.
Oh yeah, I got the PSD cause I wanted it.

Judging by the reactions to my post I think it was missunderstood. I was not knocking anyone that owns a 6.0 and drives a limited # of miles per year and then trades it in for something newer in short order. There are times in fact I wish I could do it myself believe me the winshield time even in a great truck like this can be very trying at times. The original post was about understanding why people trade in their rigs with so few miles or jump from an 04 or 05 to an 06 or 07. The logic does not escape me new rigs are fun and something new always gets the juices flowing. I applaud the idea of keeping something new in the driveway the fact that I happen to run some extreem miles in short order has more to do with the nature of my business than the choice to have a new truck in the driveway. Given a choice I would still have a new one sitting there every few years just because, even if I didn't drive so much. So I do get the whole "guess what I got and it's better than yours" attitude. I do love the smell of a new truck and nothing beats heated leather seats on a cold morning. I do appreciate the fact that we indeed do live in the land of opportunity and that we have the right to take advantage of that by the whole risk, reward philosophy that I live by. I work 80 to 100 hours a week and my business affords me the opportunity to get what I want and I take full advantage of that so yea lets all have a drink on that and enjoy all the fine things that life can offer we deserve it.
Just to clarify a bit, I wasn't reacting to your post, Job#1, I was reacting to the initial post of this thread. We are all at different places in life, and there are many very good reasons (just read the above posts, including yours) for chosing the PSD, both technical and financial - I just can't get into the whole "better than yours" mentality. The initial post made no particular bones about calling folks like me an idiot because I don't use my truck for work and I didn't put a hundred thousand miles on it the first month or something like that. I think I'll go outside now and look at my truck and sulk...with a big s**t eating grin on my face for being such a fool. ;-))
I will admit this truck is WAY more than I needed, but it is exactly what I wanted and at 11k off MSRP I was sold. I need to buy a new place with a bigger garage.

Get a Chrome XLT grill at the parts counter for $360 (Cdn retail), some Lariat wheels on Ebay for $350+90 for shipping (U.S.). Aftermarket stereo for $200. Heck yes, the XL is the hidden gem in the SD lineup. I personally think Power Windows and Locks are just options that break and cost you money down the road.
My '05 sits Monday through Friday in the driveway. But I can't wait for the weekend to fire her up. Yup, it is wayyyy more truck than I will ever need, but "I could, and I can". I wanted one last diesel (had 3 before) before the Feds and California make it impossible to own one.
I have a friend who crunched his '02 PSD grille and just stuck the '05 chrome grille on the truck. It looks great...like he just bought a new truck.
