Well Skipper your reply explains it. You automatically assume that everyone with an RV only uses it 4 or 5 times a year and from your previous post just because your having problems...then everyone must be.
Following your logic and I guess along with the fact that i traded from an '04 to an '06 that I shouldn't have bought a Deville because that dosen't make since and i can't recoop my cost and i guess I should have bought a Kia or whatever.
Trade up at prime time. My dealer actually wants trade-ins to meet customer demand for used trucks. Business people find trading a good investment, ISO Standards has created a supply of used trucks.
The run'em till the wheel falls off mentality is your choice. I keep an eye on newer deals and when it right for me, I trade or sell off for a new truck. Once your past the high point of your trucks used value it rapidly diminishes.
The overall response seems to be 'because I can', or 'I want to'.
I agree 100%. First home I bought was 950sq ft. 3 bedrooms and one bath. Although I am in a new city now, I could easily live in a comparable home now with my wife and 2 kids. But I now have a 4000 sq foot home. Do I 'need' it? Nope. But I 'want' it, and can afford it, so that's what I have.
My kids college is taken care of, I have what I certainly hope is enough to retire on (although I am still working and putting more away). So I'm spending some. I'm not rich, nor extravagant, but I work hard and earn a decent living, so, I DESERVE it. I like deisel's power, when and if I need it. Doesn't make a difference if it is daily or once every other year.
I know many people who buy a car/truck and drive it till the wheels fall off. GOOD FOR THEM, but that isn't me. I do not want to 'dread' getting into my vehicle every time I do so.
Doesnt' anyone drive their trucks till they wear out anymore?
For me the answer is no on any vehicle not just trucks. There are a percentage of people in the world that have little or no apptitude for fixing vehicles. I am one of those people. I can do a lot of things but fixing cars is just not one of them. Maybe it was a bad childhood, maybe it is two left hands (sorry lefties), maybe I just ain't so smart. I am not sure which one of those is the reason but whatever it is I CAN NOT FIX CARS. So when my vehicle gets to the point that "Little Things", as people affectionatly refer to them, start going wrong that means trips to the mechanic. Trips to the mechanic mean money out of my pocket, which means I have to work harder, and who wants to do that. I drive what I want, within my budget.
Now as to why the diesel. I thought long and hard about the diesel especially considering my above mentioned mechanical apptitude. That is why I bought the extended warranty AND the maintance package. Covers all my maintance up to the 30,000 mile checkup. By that time my diesel ought to be settling into it's groove for many trouble free miles. I or my wife tow a 30 ft travel trailer with hopes of moving into a 5vr in the future. My wife shows dogs for a living and travels a lot. Of the 7700 miles my truck currently has on it 5700 of them have been towing our trailer with most of that coming in a trip from home to St Louis (yes my wife really would make a 5000 mile trip for a dog show ) I wanted a vehicle that we could tow our trailer with ease with and not have to worry about wether or not we are pushing the vehicles limits. I would like to say that I will keep my diesel for 500,000 miles and then think about trading it in but that would be a foolish statement on my part. If there comes a time during my ownership of that vehicle that "in my opinion" it becomes to expensive to own, for whatever reason, I will be down to my Ford dealership, (Yes I did say MY Ford dealership because my wife and I have bought 6 Fords from them in our 10 years of marriage) for a new car.
I know that MY salesman will get me the best deal on my trade in and give me the best price he possibly can on a new vehicle. I have said it before and will say it again. I have developed a relationship with my dealership. I am happy to give them my money and in return they take as little of it as possible. They get paid and I get a new car grin. Similar to the 6.0 grin but not as wide.
Car buying for me has always been a pleasure. I get to reminise with friends I don't see all that often after making a few small decisions and wait for the paperwork. I never even saw my truck till the day I picked it up. I emailed my salesman with what I wanted, he called me a few weeks later and said it was in, I went down, took it for a spin while he drew up the papers and then drove home. Never did I once worry about wether it would be the car I wanted. Because of my relationship with him I knew that he would get me everything I wanted plus some and as usual the sale was everything I expected. Time spent "working the deal and signing the paperwork" 1 hr, time spent "B.S'ng with the guys at the dealership" 2 hrs.
I guess that puts me a little off topic but I have been known to ramble

I love buying new cars, just so you can understand how much I love it, had a 200 VW Passatt, traded that car the next year for a 2003 Dodge 1500 ten months later I traded the Dodge for my very first Ford a 2003 F-250 V10 Lariat 4X4 which I thought would keep forever, then one of my friends had to go buy himself a diesel, well, let's just say that the same day he bought his and he let me drive it I went to the dealrship and bought me a 2006 Ford F-250 Powerstroke Diesel Lariat 4X4 with all of the whistles and bells I wanted.
We like the power and ease of which a diesel pulls it's load, that's why we like diesels. Why we will be on our 3rd diesel in three years is more stupidity on my part, since I'm the one that's responsible for making sure what we buy will work for us.
We had an '99 F250 4x4 SC/LB PSD that we bought used for an excellent price from a friend. Had that for several years and loved it very much. When we started camper shopping we were warned that most slide in cab-over campers would put you over legal weight, so we ordered an '05 F350 with everything we wanted and bought our heavy camper. On another thread last year I described our frustration of how our dealer treated us, letting our truck get test driven before we went to pick it up, and we ended up passing on buying it.
We decided for a while to just not use our new (to us) camper, and then the GM employee pricing thing hit and in an uninformed and franky impulsive move, we went and test drove one and took the dealers word that the truck (a 3500 srw 4x4 duramax), had the capacity for our camper (about 2700lbs dry). A week after I brought the Chevy home I found a sticker in the glove that said not to run a camper heavier than 2082#s and after loading the camper on and going to the scales (camper dry) we found it was 10,500#s (on a 9900# gvwr truck). So we thought we'd be careful and wait until '08 6.4l Fords came out.
until I read about all the emissions crap coming and that bumped up our timetable. Drove the '99 for 3 years and sold it for what I paid for it. Am taking a loss on the Chevy of about $7k, but will actually be about what we'd have paid for the ordered '05 (pre-employee price deals of last year). So while I don't want to afford it, we will, and we'll chalk it up to a lesson learned.
we're retired so the truck as a work truck doesn't apply. But we have that camper and horses and a boat and a bobcat and a car trailer that all require serious towing power. For that we choose to pay the premium of getting a diesel and not worrying about pulling a long grade in the heat of summer and needing to pass a big rig.
We're not rich either in absolute terms, but I guess in our terms, we have all we need and most of what we want, most valuable of which is our time!

i got mine because i can and i like it. i got the diesel because i like the sound and the mpg, even though it won't pay for itself for awhile, if ever. yes, its more expensive, but so are alot of things people don't "need".
i don't tow, or haul anything, its just my daily driver.
if i wanted to be practical, i would have bought a focus to drive.
America, its all about living in excess!!!!
as far as trading the truck in every 2 years, hey, if someone can afford it, why not? why go through all the trouble in life to go to school, get a decent job, move up in the company, make some good money, all to drive around in something old, whats next, just living in a 2 room flat? if i could afford, i would trade mine in for an 2006, just happens a used 2004 was all i could afford.
I second that response. As for me, I live in Hawaii which is alittle dot on the map and I can drive around the island and not even touch 100 miles put in. I got my 05 F350 used with only 3,000 miles on it and got it for just under 30K which is a steal so I'm happy and pull a little costco trailer for going to the dump or to go fishing/camping. I'm happy with it and that's all that matters to me.
Guess, it comes down to we like the Ford diesel and we can buy it. I do haul a 5th wheel (11,000 lbs) a few times a year and it is nice to be on the highway around Chicago and know I can control what is happening to the truck and trailer. For everyday driving we own a 2005 Focus ZX5 SES, leather, moon roof, etc, etc. Why all that fancy stuff - because it is nice to have. I can not complain about fuel mileage, service, or dealership. I just wish my favorite saleperson had not quit to go back to school; but I did the same after 25 years in the Air Force so no complaining.
For the longest time before i bought my psd i stopped and talked to everyone i saw driving gasers and diesels at the gas station. I asked them what they were getting for gas milage. The diesel owners were getting on average 5 to 6 mpg better than the gasers. This weighed on my decision to buy diesel because i travel 45 miles in each direction to work. I did the math and figured with the fuel savings, it would take me approx. 3 1/2 years to pay back the cost of the diesel. THen i looked at used gasers and diesels and resale doesent even compare, diesels hold their value way more than gas. I plan on owning this truck for a while, and waited along time to buy it, so longivity and reliability was also a factor. All the psd owners that i know have very few issues .
I haul a small tractor, i plan on getting a slide in camper in the near future, and i make frequent trips to maine(about 300 miles). The diesel was more but with my future and present plans for this truck, it was a no brainer for me.
I have had an 03 w/18k miles, an 05 w/ 7k, an 06 w/ 8k and now an 07 with practically no miles. I don't pull anything. My hobby just happens to be customizing trucks (see my galleries) and wasting $. Yes I have a problem, but I make six digits a year working only 3 days a week so I guess I do it because I have too much time on my hands.
I'm the same as pamelbert. I just love customizing my vehicles.and I do it all by myself. I'm still in the stoneage, no power tools for my mechanic work, all hand tools. It's my hobby and I get a natural high doing it. I do go wheelin on the weekends so it's not just for show. I get her pretty messy at times. I just added 8" fabtech leafs and traction bars in the rear so I can get a little more aggresive. when I go wheelin. By the way pamelbert that's one sweet rig you got there
I have an 04 F250 6.0 Lariat TD 4x4. Just a leveling kit, 4 inch exhaust from the turbo back with no cat and an Airaid. Plus, have an air compressor mounted underneath. I got it cause I love the look of it, sound of it, have all the options. I pretty much trade my vehicles every 2 years, but I really like this one and have faith in the "diesel" lasting forever. Some people like having the nice stuff. I like having the nice, new, and "better than yours" things. LOL. J/k, but not really.
