Hedman Headers

I have a 79 F-250 4x4 with a 351M and the NP435/205 combination. I've rebuilt the engine and I'm about ready to put it in, but I'm trying to decide between stock manifolds and the Hedman Elite 89218 headers.

I understand that the collectors come out fairly close to the transmission crossmember. Hedman's instructions suggest routing the drivers' pipe down under the crossmember. I have the dual tanks, and I would prefer to run a single 3" pipe back.

Is there room to cross the driver's side exhaust over to the passenger side in front of the crossmember? From there, I'd like to duplicate the factory pipe routing between the crossmember and the cab. I have no exhaust on the truck whatsoever, so connecting with an existing pipe is not a concern.

Is it possible and practical to do what I want here? Does anyone have pictures of the underside of their truck showing how they made a y-pipe?

Thanks.

I don't have the headman headers, but I just put on some summit headers and put on duals. When I finished installing the headers, there wasn't much room for anything.
IF you made a 90 degree turn right after the header, you might be able to fit it inbetween the header and the crossmember, but not likely.
I much rather headers over exhasut manafolds anyday.

I'd also like to know too, I'm in the same boat looking at exhaust options. Hooker makes a exhaust kit for headers and manifolds for the factory routing. Summit carries them and I think the kit minus headers and muffler is about $220. Hedman also make an elite header for fenderwell exit, but then the exhaust is on the outside of the frame rail, some people like that, some don't.

I got a local muffler shop to do mine for $180 w/ mufflers and 18" long 3 1/2" tips, and it sounds great, and is done pretty good.

Why don't you get outside the frame headers. They make exhaust hookup easy. Just some straight pipe and a muffler. No bends. I did mine in my driveway.

I live in CA and the fenderwell exits are not CARB approved. In fact, the headmen chassis exit and the doug thorley headers are the only ones CA approved. Unfortuntely, from what I can find, neither of them lend themselves to being easy to plumb.

I was also thinking of running fenderwell exit headers but was conserned that running 38" tires would rub on the headers. Has anyone ran 38s and had this happen?

Plowdude, there are a few guys on here running fenderwell exit headers and 44s. They don't have any problems, so I'm sure you'd be fine.

i have a 2wd 460 with headers and my driver side crossed under the trans. just behind the bell housing. The first x-member that goes from the radius bushings was notched as well for clearance. then dual exhaust down the passenger side (dual tanks also) and the one side shoots over right before axle to have both pipes exit out the back .

I have 38.5 Swampers and they rubbed a little. I just adjusted my steering stops out a little. Problem solved.
