I'm having fit problems with my headers, big surprize. The headers are Hedman part number 89340. They're on an 87 F250 4X4 460 4BBL 8600GVW. They are supposed to be the correct ones for this truck from 83 to 87 according to Hedman, Summit, and PAW. I have 3 fit problems. 1. It is almost friggin impossible to get a wrench on the starter wire bolt. The headers do clear the starter (no by much, I'm a little worried about heat soak) so I guess I can deal with this one. I know headers have a reputation of being a bitch. 2. I had to dimple one tube on the passenger side to clear the frame. 3. The dip stick tube will NEVER make it to the pan following the original route. I think I can re-bend it and get it to work, but I'm pissed about this one. I'm just wondering if anybody else has had these problems with these headers. They are supposed to be "direct fit". This is my first time working with full length headers and I'm not too happy with Hedman right now.
I want to put headers on my 86 F250 4x4, 460. but the problems you are having seem to be common, unless you pay $500-$600 for a good set. I also want a set of hugger or stock replacement so I don't have to deal with the spot the pipes cross under the bell housing. One way to solve the starter problem is to buy some wrap from Jegs or Summit wrap the pipe that is close to the starter. Sorry to hear of your troubles, hope you get what you hoped for out of the headers, then at least it might not hurt as bad.
one thing you could do is change to the mini starter .they are quite a bit smaller in size but more power as they are gear reduction i believe .had headers on my 74 highboy and couldnt get the starter out without loosening headers now i can take it in and out very easily
Well, they are on the truck. I was able to get the starter hooked up with a fair amount of cussing and a custom bent wrench. We'll see how it does heat wise once I get the truck on the road although it seemed ok durring break in and after a short ride. The dimple in the one tube wasn't too bad. I was able to re-route the dip stick. I made a mock up of the tube with soft copper tubing so I only had to bend the factory steel one once. This little trick (my dad's idea) worked great. IT IS FINALLY RUNNING, HOWEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YE HAW. I took it for a ride Christmas day, absolutely no interior except the dash (sat on a milk crate), no bed, no tail lights, no bumpers, no hood latch, no door gaskets, air in the brake lines, but it sure made my day!
Hey, I forgot to ask, does anyone make shorty headers for this application? I've only seen them for small blocks. I would have gone with shorties if I knew they were available. I guess I'm still steamed about the way these fit. $50 or $1000, if they say direct fit, then they should fit. If they don't just bolt up, they should not say that they do. Sorry, I'm ranting to the wrong people here. Maybe next time, I'll make my own.
