I just bought a 69 F250 with a 390 (that what the guy I bought it from told me). The truck has headers on it. They leak, there loud, and the heat they put out is causing my starter to act like I have a dead battery when the truck is hot. I would like to replace the headers with the stock exhaust manifolds. My problem is I don’t what the originals manifolds look like or how to tell if they’re the right ones for my motor. Does anyone know how to identify them? Are they are stamped with any marking identifying them? Any tricks on installing them?
69f250Mark-take a look at some truck exhaust manifolds, I really don't think thats what you want. Some of us love our headers. But if that really isn't what you want, any FE powered truck,up to 1976, should have what you want, the salvage yards are full of them. If you can't find what you want, send me a message and I'll trade you some manifolds for your headers. If you do find some, what do you want for your headers? DF
Yea i will buy those headers too i need a new set altho my 7 year old P.A.W. catalog has hookers for $109 i need to call them and order a set i hope they are still the same price anyone got a newer than 1993 if so could you please look up headers for a 1975 Ford F-250 4x4 w/ 390 and tell me the price pppppppplease!
Mark, DF and I have a long running opposing view of headers. He being the hotrod race minded type, thinks every motor should have headers. Me on the other hand being more level headed :-) and wanting to operate my truck at 4000rpms and less and most of the time at 2500 rpm think they a real waste of your money and time. It sure did my heart good to see someone new come here and write what you did.
Maybe if you posted your address, one of those guys would come by and remove your headers and install the manifolds for you for the headers. ;-)

In the still cool hours of the night,
you can hear chevys rusting away.
You can try the junkyards, but be careful. These manifolds are notorious for wearing out and warping. You can mill them to a certain extent but not too much. The manifolds are also very susceptible to breakage. While I'm not a big fan of the stockers, I just can't force myself to buy the long tube headers so I'm going to try a "shorty" style offered by Sanderson. They are around $280 for a 390 application, but then again new stock manifolds are about $200.
Jegs has DynoMax for about $100, www.jegs.com. If you decide to keep your headers, just put a heat shield around the starter and that'll keep it working well. FE manifolds suck, they are poor design. Headers with good large mufflers can be quiet, just not as quiet as stock or cast iron headers.
OTTO,
Don't know what your truck is, but before I went to Sanderson shorties, I put the "cheap" Dynomax on my 74 hi-boy with 390. Didn't have to jack the engine up. The driver's side just had you remove the clutch linkage, as I recollect; passenger side was a slip-in sleeve so that two pipes ran around each side of the cross-member and then slip together. But then what do you do? Either weld up the sleeves and risk never having to work on the starter, or try to patch them with muffler bandage and clamps like I did. The bandaid would last a couple 1000 miles and come loose. And I had continuing problems getting the gaskets to hold at both the head and collector flanges. Oh, just about forgot, also had one tube on the driver's side so close to the pan that I figured the gasket was being toasted. So, those "fine" Dynomax's are now laying in a pile of many pieces after being removed with a reciprocating saw; never could have been happier than to see that! :-) The Sanderson's were beaucoup bucks, but look good, don't interfere with the starter, AND they don't leak!
Good Luck, Steve
Thanks for all the advice. I think I’ll take the path of least resistance and cost for right now. I’m going to wrap my starter with a heat shield I found in a Summit catalog. Hopefully this will fix the starting problem. I’m still looking for the exhaust leak; once I fix that it should quite down some. Thanks for the help!!
dont settle for headers, get the manifolds, I have headers on my f150 400 and the under hood temps in traffice are terribly high, especially here in the south texas summers
I haven’t given up on replacing the headers; I’m going to keep my eye out for a good set of manifolds. My problem right now is that the exhaust system form the headers back is brand new and I would hate to spend money replacing something new.
nah youll be okay with those headers just get them sealed up properly maybe when your exhaust is all shot them give the manifolds a try but till then i wouldnt worry bout them and the manifold design is pretty shady too
