does anyone have a copy of the parts diagram for the ats turbo. i have an 86 6.9 and i have an exaust leak where the down tube comes off the turbo. is there a gasket there or some type of dounut.
drz400gncc,
I have the newer version with the wastegate and 3" downpipe.
The downpipe just slips into the turbo outlet flange.
No gasket or anything.
Mine leaks there for a couple of thousand miles till the carbon builds up around the pipe. After that getting the pipe back out is a bit of a job the fit is so tight.
What are you running for an exhaust and muffler?
I am running dual 3" stacks, no muffler and enough single 3" pipe to make it from the downpipe to the back of the cab before it splits to the stacks.
86turbo,
No idea how much it can make, I have the wastegate set at 16 PSI which is easy to make. That is actually a little high for a 6.9 with stock head bolts and gaskets.
drz400gncc,
I have the older ATS non-wastegated model. Original installation was 1990 so it might be similar to yours even though it's on a 7.3. I'm remembering that the downpipe installation is just a friction fit but I couldn't find my parts sheet. The down pipe on mine was so carboned up and corroded that I finally gave up trying to get it out in 2 peices. After it was out of the truck I still couldn't manage to get it apart. As a one peice unit it can only be removed by pulling the engine and then it has to be reinstalled as the engine is going back in. ( Won't tell you how I know that for certain but I kept trying to get it apart until I had to buy some new parts from ATS.)
The highest boost I've seen on my gauge is 9. Mostly it pulls 7 to 8 lbs of boost.
the downpipe on the ats system is a interferrence fit. If the angle is not right from a too long of exhaust system from the downpipe back, it will leak at that point.
thanks for the info guys. mine is the waste gated one . it just started leaking and its getting worse. its been on for a couple of years maybe the pipe is degrading.
I built a bracket that attaches the downpipe to my tranny.
Keeps it from moving when I get the chassis in a hard bind off road.
That plus the very low restriction exhaust keep the leaks to a minumum at the turbo connection.
ATS has the breakdowns on thier wb site. Go to the ford section, the turbo, at the top it will say technical reference, click that. They have three turbos for 6.9-7.3's. The 085 is wastegated, the 088 is not, then the newer wastegated style. I think the number is the year it started selling. how it helps.
