Not to be a bother, but I also need a tailgate for my 49 F-1.
Brand new I found one from LMC, they want $400.00 for it.
Dose anyone know of one I could get kinda cheap, or have one you want to get rid of?
Even used and in poor shape, these old tailgates go for big bucks. If you can get one for under $100 you will be one lucky joker.
Like some dude on Ebay yesterday... got a 53-72 stepside F-100 tailgate for $15 plus $35 s&h
and... it was in almost perfect condition.
That guy is one lucky joker.
Only reason he got it for so cheap is cause the seller didn't put enough info in the title to get enough search hits. I think all it said was "pickup tailgate" or somethin stupid like that.
Maybe you'll get lucky.. I wouldn't pay $400 for a tailgate either. I'd rather pay around $100... or $15+$35 s&H
That is exaclty what I am thinking.
If I get a used one, buying, cleaning, and painting it will be almost if not more than a new one.
So if I don't find one I will probably get a new one.
At least you don't have to worry about rust for a while.
And I do need to paint the whole pick up.
But that will be in time.
I need to tear it apart and clean the whole thing first.
One thing you need to be aware of is this: When you buy a NEW tailgate they are not guaranteed to be in perfect shape.. Their disclaimer is this: Its made in a third world country and shipped over here by freight and most of the time they get some small dings in them.
You may need to do some straightening when you get it.. another thing to concider.
Teh center part of my tailgate is in fairly good shape. the top roll and the bottom roll are a bit dinged and mangled. I picked up a late 70's stepside tailgate for $30 the other day. My plan is to use the top and bottom roll from the later tailgate and "rebuild" my gate.
I used EMT conduit, I think 3'4" or 1", to patch the lower roll of my F-2's tailgate. The OD was exactly the same. I also used 3/4" black pipe for the rolled edge on the upper edge on the sides of the box. The wall of the black pipe is a heck of a lot thicker than the original metal and won't ding up like the original. I reamed the back opening with a step drill to make is look like a lighter gauge metal.
