I just bought a '04 2wd with the 4.0L v6 Auto and am looking to doing some engine upgrades. I'm planning an exhaust system for it shortly, but what else can I do without really getting into the engine internally? I'm looking at the power programmers on the market, but will this give me all the power possible by itself or do i need to some other upgrades to help it out? Any help would be great!
Engine swap (v8).....more cubic inches is the fastest and most effective way to produce a honest, meaningful, and worthy of discussion result. If you like the incrementally small and slow route, you're gonna get ideas shortly.
**We just had a thread along these lines a few days ago and it's very interesting that this subject came up again so soon. Most interesting. Hmmmmmmmm. I can only wonder how many hours this thread will last. On the flip side, this forum has had no *real* and attentive mod review and it hasn't since April of this year (2006). In fact, some long timers here will readily admit our once tech savy and knowledge wealthy forum had gone down the gutter . None the less, you will def be getting feedback and ideas that are worth considering and in some cases worth maybe even pursuing.

ya i saw the thread on the 3.0L upgrades and wasn't sure if they would be the same. sorry about the repeat and will look up the other threads on the matter.
It's not the same, the 3.0 is weak, the 4.0 rocks, check my pm, it will give you some good idea's. The guys live for these threads, how boring thier lifes would be without performance topics. I built a 4.0, so what do you want to know?
I just looking to bolt some things to her, I willing to put up some money but i'm not gonna to crazy and tear the cam out or pistons etc. Just looking for some realiable everyday power that'll make this truck really fun. Torque is more what i'm looking for, not real interested in during a 110 in my truck.
excellent, but call me a dummy, i'm not familiar with udp (new to these forum shorthand). I thought about headers but my buddy said they get to hot and burn up starters, then again he had this problem with this 65 'stang.
Jba headers can be had with ceramic, and titanium coating to cut down on heat, I haven't had a problem, Yeah, gears are a great power booster, thanks Billy, I wasn't even thinking about gears for once ha ha. Also, there's a great programer that alot of us use, thats just awesome, tunned just for rangers, I can't give the name, or the mods won't let my post print, I'll put it in your private message box. When going with a catback, don't go with to big of pipes, go no bigger than 2.5", and single in, and single out, or you can loose lowend torque. The bigger pipes work better in the higher rpm ranges. Most ranger cats come in the 2.5", not a problem. UDP, means under drive pully, under dog sells them.
"O YEAH", a good electric fan is perma-cool, they use metal blades, where as black magic uses plastic, and I have broken the plastic ones in the mud, so I went with perma-cool, I haven;t had a problem since. The udp, and e-fan will give you more usable torque to the wheels, instead of being parastic drag on the engine.
