Question General Front Suspension Question...

Well, we know how all new front-end suspensions are "sealed for life". So, they don't have grease points. With that said I have ALWAYS greased a vehicle EVERY oil change (3 months). My motto: Grease is cheap, labour and parts are not.

Now, to my question. Would it be better to "puncture" the boot on a ball joint and squeeze in some grease or just leave it alone until it fails then replace it with a greasable joint? Also, same question for tie-rod ends.

Thanks.

-Matt

P.S. This question is for, of course, my Focus.

leave it alone!
There's no reason to expect that the suspension parts won't last the life of the car under normal use and conditions.

Sorry Fordzilla but that I know is false. Every Ford that I have had with "sealed for life part" went bad within 60000 miles or soon there after. I do know my dads Ranger lasted a little longer. I also know that the replacement moog parts come with zerk fittings.

P.S. Matt why don't you just give those mice some osteobiflex so they quit squeaking. At least more cheese.

Well, they aren't squeaking yet but oh well, maybe I will try the cheese.

I wouldn't touch it - more so in your winter climate with salt on the roads

If the boot is good, dont break the seal. My F-150 ball joints were still perfect when I sold it at 150,000 miles. Once the boot is damaged, then regular greasing is a must. Some sealed ones have a pastic plug over the threaded hole and all you have to do is add a fitting. The Chevy had fittings on everything and I did grease them annually. I sold it at 100,000 so I dont have an exact comparison of durability.

I wish. I will double check but I don't think they are there. Ticks me off that it comes down to this because humans are too lazy to maintain their vehicles. I am glad I am not one, a human that is.

D
The reason they fail is because the seals start to leak(or someone has poked them with a grease neeedle or pressure washer) and water or dirt gets in .
I've seen minivans go 200k with no problems on the front end parts.
My '70 4x4 with grease fittings everywhere needed a total front end rebuild at 70,000 miles.
