Hey FTE, I need to grease my splines in the drive shaft but I'm not sure what type of "grease" to use? I have some Quaker state multi-purpose grease and and wheel bearing lube..its a superfine lube an NLGI No. 2 smooth grease.
Should I use that or something else? How much grease should I apply to the male/female end?
Years ago I had grease fitting on my yokes, easy to grease , I always used the moly grease tubes in my grease gun , but ford uses teflon grease , and you don't need a lot to do the job. most guys remove the band type clamp and use a zip tie to hold it back on , I put most of the grease through out the yoke and a small film on the drive shaft splines ,make sure you mark the shaft in a few places so the unit goes back in the same way.
i used "multi-purpose" on my driveshaft spline 2 years ago and its still moving freely. just checked it a few weeks ago.
i made sure i put the boot on as tight as possible "with zipties" to prolong life of grease.
I used the "teflon" grease that Ford sells, and it hasn't stopped working yet. I did redo it when I had the driveshaft out to do my fuel pump retainer ring (which broke for some reason).
I've heard that regular grease will not last anywhere near as long as the teflon stuff, but no idea if that's true or not.
I greased mine 3 yrs ago. I remember looking for fully synthetic grease but couldn't find any, even at NAPA. The regular grease I used is giving out, because the clunk is starting again. Next time I will get some teflon from Ford.
I used a synthetic blend Valvoline brand grease on mine. I went to my "local" (1 hr away) Ford dealer and tried to buy the grease they recommend and the parts guy said that they don't use that there, they just go to NAPA and buy any brand of "good" grease
Anyway, since I was in a hurry and the next Ford dealer was another 40 minutes away, I got the Valvoline. It fixed my "thump" on takeoff and so far its holding up (only about 6 months so far though).
Here's a writeup I did because my driveshaft configuration was different than the one on eurekaboy's site posted above.
