I recently bought what the former owner said was a 71 F100. The title he gave me has '71 with the vin number. The grill on the truck is from a 69. I can't verify the vin number on the truck because the sticker inside the door jamb on the drivers side is messed up. Is there any other place on the body with the identification number other than the door area? I was told the frame doesn't belong to this body so if the vin is stamped in the frame, that won't help.
I have a Chilton manual that explains the indetification plates. i cant see a difference betwee the 69 and the 70 - 72 plate.
Driver's door and right fram rail...other than those locations, you're SOL. Why does it matter what year it is? If it's got a '69 grille, then it's a '69, unless it has a 302, then it's a '71 with a '69 grille. I guess what I'm trying to say is basically all '67 to '72 models are the same aside from some minor cosmetics and choices of engines, but most have FE's anyway.
It really doesn't matter what year it is. I'm putting the frame from the donor truck under my 72. The engine code on the data plate calls for a 302, so I guess at least the door is from a 71.
Did you say you had the door data plate from the '71'? One way to get an approximate idea of the year is to check the date codes on the glass, assuming it's original. The code is a letter and a number. (ie: 1 C would translate to mar 71) These codes are generally within a month or two of the actual build date. The only physical difference in the 68-72 cabs I've seen is the location of the shoulder belt mounting hole. Some time between april and june of 71 it was moved forward toward the door opening. Just for 'buzzards' information, the 302 was first offered in 69 for the F series. If you have the door plate, tell us the last six digits of the serial number on it and someone will be able to tell you the month and year of that cab if it's the original door.
Do you want to know the year of the frame or the body or the grill? I think the vin on titles are supposed to match the frame. There are also differences on the beds, the 67,68, and I think 69 had the side marker light mounted below where the chrome strip is and 70-72 had it in line with the chrome.
The 67-69 didn't have side marker lights. They had reflectors mounted low on the bed side just forward of the taillight panel )(the cap that wraps around the end of the bed from the side to the tailgate). 70-72 models had side marker lights in the taillight panel about midway up even with the body line (and in the side molding for trucks that came with it).

Somebody help me out here. MK points out that the 302 was offered in 1969, but does not eloborate. Everything I've ever seen, read and heard indicates that the 302 was not introduced into F-series until the 1970 model. What's the scoop here?
LAST EDITED ON 31-Jul-01 AT 07:40 PM (EST)[p]I thought that the VIN was supposed to match the frame and not the body to be legal. That is what happened when my truck was stolen. The THIEVES got paperwork for a '71 and used that to register my truck. I was able to retrieve my truck when his paperwork did not match the frame and mine did! My truck is a '70 model.

Buzzard, the 302 was made available in mid '69 for F100 2WD models only.
