I'm needin help here, will it hurt to run Mercon III in a tranny that is marked for Mercon II fluid? Accidentally put the wrong stuff in my Toyota(dont kill me for the yota.) havent driven it at all, but I want to know if it'll hurt anything before I do anything else.
The upgraded Mercons will work in trans marked for the older oils. I think it is around Mercon V that you can no longer do this. It usually tells you on the container. jim d

Are you sure about the MERCON II and MERCON III?
There is MERCON, MERCON V and MERCON SP. I haven't heard of MERCON II or MERCON III.
Now DEXRON, DEXRON II, DEXRON III and DEXRON IV, those are all valid names and are all backwards compatible. So you can run DEXRON IV in a tranny marked for DEXRON, DEXRON II and DEXRON III.
The higher the number the tighter the specs. Anti-wear, anti-friction, anti-foaming, etc. will all be more stringent in DEXRON IV than in DEXRON, for example. Also the "tackiness" will vary.
There is no difference. There is MERCON, MERCON V, and MERCON SP. There is no such thing as MERCON II or MERCON III fluids.
Ford used to say that MERCON and MERCON V were not interchangable. Now they have changed the MERCON V formulation and say that is can be used in place of MERCON. And by next year there will be no more MERCON as Ford won't be issuing any more licenses to make MERCON fluids.
well I meant Dexron, my bad. after posting this, I went out and did something I shoulda done to start with, READ THE STUPID BOTTLE. they're compatible so I'm good and my car shifts through gears much better.
What you need to understand about ATF is that the important differences between fluid types are the frictional properties. Type F and Mercon, for instance, do not interchange. I made the mistake of using Dexron in a 1981 Toyota that called for Type F. Severe slippage was the immediate result. When you talk about Dexron to Dexron II to III, etc, improvements in cold-flow, anti-foaming, anti-oxidation are just evolutionary advances, like from one generation of motor oil to the next.
Thanks. i just got my first real 4x4 and i think i already broke it today. uggg. got burried in mud that was pouring into the cab. not easy to do with over 9 inches of lift kit. oh well. ill just have to fix it all.
Thanks man, yeah i found it. i also found out that i had alot more work to do. i had to pull the bellhousing out a little bit yesterday and scrape mud and clay out. absolutly sucked but i think with a little more of that today she will be back ready to go hit the trails again. if only the garage where i plowed through the door when the clutch stuck was as easy to fix as the truck problem.
