Trying to get some ideas on why this truck(96 PSD, crew, 4.10s, Auto) seems gutless. When I hit the throttle while rolling(i.e. to pass, climb a hill) it doesn't jump like it should. Not sure where to start looking. Was thinking clogged or bad injectors but how do I check? Would a clogged cat do that? What about trans? The trans seems fine. Had it since it was new and it is all stock.
Make sure you have a clean fuel filter & drain any water out, make sure you have clean new oil & oil filter, and unrestricted air intake. Check the fuel pressure at the schrader valve, it should be 40 psi or up.
Check your connectors on the valve cover gaskest, look for burnt pins or melted connectors. You can ohm out the under valve cover wiring before you pull the valve covers. If any of the injector wiring is over 3 ohms you have a problem and need to pull the valve cover to isolate it. You need to ohm test the resistance between the middle pin of each plug and the pins on each side of it.
There are five pins in the connector "1 2 3 4 5". Pins 1 & 5 are for the glow plugs; pins 2 & 4 are the injector low side and pin 3 (the middle one) is the injector high side. You can also test the glowplugs, they should not be over 20 ohms, (they don't have anything to do with power loss).
First listen when you get on it hard do you hear the Turbo wind up
Pull the air intake tube and look at blades. If they are flattened out You're not gonna get any boost. If they look frosted you have dust getting past air cleaner.
Plowhand, I'll do those things tomorrow. Too many things going on all at once. Do you check the fuel press while it's running or just with the key on? Do I use a reg tire press gauge?
Check the fuel pressure with it running at idle. You can use a regular tire gauge. But some caution, put a rag or paper towels under the schrader valve, have a rag or paper towel to hold under & around the gauge. When you put the gauge on, watch the top (the end that the pressure scale comes out of, since you will have the gauge upside down) as soon as you see fuel coming out of it, pull it off, or you will blow fuel all over the engine compartment. When you pull the gauge off, fuel will leak out of it (the gauge) so make sure you have the rag under and around it.
