I am going to get an aftermarket down pipe for my 96 and I was wondering if I should just do the 3" or the 4". My exhaust is only 3 1/2 I believe. I think I am going to get one from Bully dog.
I am leaning towards the 3" just for the ease of installation.
yes, the stock exhaust is 3.5". the 4" dp that you are referring about should not be harder to install than the 3". it would flare out to 4" after it passes the firewall. if you want to keep the stock exhaust pipe, go with the 3" dp and mate it to the 3.5" stock exhaust

Agreed, I have the 3"-4" and LOVE it... But if yer gunna go thru the truble of installing a new downpipe, why keep the stock exhaust? The CAT and Muffler add soooooo much restriction to the flow, Id say kik those off there and git a good 4" exhaust. Thats just me tho.
The truck had the muffler and cat removed when I bought it, they sectioned in 3" pipe where the two were removed. I had not planned on replacing the whole exhaust system, I am trying to cure high EGT's.
I don't know what you consider to be High egt's but a new DP will help. While you're at it take a look through the Cat. Lotsa restriction, huh!
You can take a hammer and bust all that stuff outta there. The stock muffler is a bit restrictive, I would opt for a Walket Big truck muffler or anything you can see right thru.
Now that you may have dismantled the stock system you might as well replace the whole thing with as big ($$) as you can get. Future mods to the engine will thank you.
Take a look at the MBRP systems their down piep expands to 4.0 inches at 21 inches from the turbo, quicker than anyone I believe!! They are available in aluminized and 409 stainless and will get you the max flow to drop the EGT the most. Call us if you have any questions on it we'll be glad to help you.
