quick response needed - E40D from '96 fit '95

My trans is shot (grinding like marbles, clogged the radiator cooler). I found a low miles (77k) from a wrecked 96 4x4 with 5.0. I have a '95 with 5.8 4x4. Are they compatible?

To the best of my knowledge you should have no problem there. Unless the electronics are different (the 96 is OBDII if a F150, where the 95 is OBDI), but that should be swappable from the original trans.

The 96 should be updated over the 95 trans anyway. E4OD's built after March 22(? IIRC) are the ones with the center support bearing. My father, who was a long time Ford auto trans guru in the Midwest told me to avoid the pre-updated E4OD trucks. I have 205k on my stock 96' E4OD with only fluid & filter changes and mild abuse.

Make sure the transmission behind that '96 5.0L is an E4OD (20 bolt pan), it may actually be a 4R70W (16 bolt pan). If it is an E4OD it should be a plug-n-play swap.

yeah the 96 could be a 4r70w like my 95 5.0 4x4 has.

I found one out of a '95 5.8 that I am going to look at on Sat. $500 is asking price. Another place quoted $550 and needed to "order it in".

Not a lot of these around anymore.

Found an even better deal, but might be stuck here.

I found one from a '94 Bronco with a 5.8. Truck rotted out. the trans is a recent Ford Rebuilt and has the finned B&M Pan with drain plug. Problem is, the solenoid pack is different. Trans shop is ordering a new one (since pulling mine out is suspect) but they are wondering if it will fit. Did I just get myself into a "science project"?

Swapping solenoid packs from different versions, based on whether or not the solenoid protection diodes are on it, is very common.

I know how you feel, I had an e4od science project too.... I pulled that thing 3 times and dropped the pan 8 times all in one week... I was at my uncles shop and he has been doing this for over 25 years and he and every other mechanic in Ocala couldn't figure out why my truck was slamming into reverse so bad that it made the engine hit the fire wall, then it stalled the engine stall. Good luck, sounds like you aren't to bad off though.

Thanks. I found some info that basically states that the difference is just the protection diods which were moved to the ECM in '95. Since I will be buying a new solenoid pack for a '95, it should fit right into the '94 from what I read so I should be just fine. <fingers-crossed>.

I paid $350 for the tranny, going to use my transfer case which looks cleaner (and I just recently put a seal in) and, like I said, it's got the B&M plate and fairly fresh Ford reconditioned stickers so I think it's still going to be a good deal. Is there any value for the old trans or the transfer case other than scrap metal? would be nice to recoup a few dollars.

So, "new" trans is in. I guess the old one was bad from the time I bought the truck. Smooth shifts (no firm lift-off downshift slam), smooth on the highway (there was a grinding type sensation at 70MPH which is now gone) and it cost about $1500 total vs almost twice that for a rebuild. for those considering -

$350 for a trans/torque converter and transfercase out of a '94 Bronco. "fresh" Ford Quality Remanufactured stickers. B&M finned pan with drainplug
$1150 - R&R, swap in my transfer case that had a new rear seal, install a rear main seal in the motor, $295 for a new solenoid pack from Ford (didn't want to chance swapping mine from old trans since it was troublesome), flush the cooler again, fill with fresh fluids

Now, I have a trans and transfer case in the bed of the truck. is it worth anything other than $0.14/lb at the local scrapyard?

Glad to see you got this one resolved. IMHO the old hardware is pretty much scrap.

yeah, figured that. The trans, torque converter and transfer case added up to 318lbs @ $0.14/lb - $45
