Interesting A/C

My (surprise) 1969 F-250 has an interesting A/C unit that I wonder if anybody knows about. It was made by ARA Manufacturing and it looks to be a pretty good underdash fit. I don't know if it was dealer installed or a pure aftermarket unit.

Anyway, the underdash unit is black plastic and looks a little swoopier than the other aftermarket units I've seen. It has two straight vents in the middle and two ball vents on the outside, with its own fan and temperature *****. The whole thing looks very 1960s.

I don't know if it works because the previous owner had the belts off the compressor. Nothing happens when I turn on the fan, so I'm assuming that there is also an electrical hookup that's out or the thing just operates off the compressor (don't ask me how!).

If anyone has any comments or experience with these I'd love to hear about it. Thanks, Jon

you need refrigerant in the system to allow the compressor to come on. It takes a certail pressure for the cycling switch to send the electricity to the comporessor for it to turn on.

I HAD the same system in my '68 truck. It is a dealer add-on option. You need dedicated power to the a/c controls on the under dash unit. If your fan is good and has power it should run regardless if the compressor has freon or not. Sounds like you don't have power or the motor is fried.

Jon, ARA is supposed to be a good name in the aftermarket AC systems.

hope this helps a little. :-)

Update. I popped the hood and fiddled around with the compressor, turning it by hand and wiggling wires, thinking about putting the belt back on.

Anyway, next time I drive the truck I turn on the AC fan switch and now the fan works. I swear it didn't work before, and I can't figure out how I fixed it.

I'm not complaining, the thing blows air real well. I guess now I have no excuse not to throw a belt back on the compressor and see if it gets cold. . . .
