Question check engine light code 172 174

can anybody tell me what these codes mean and what is wrong. my truck is a 93 f-250 4x4 5.8l auto

Those are codes for OBD-II, which I believe handles 1996 on. 93truck, you should have EEC-IV and Code 172 is O2 sensor voltage signal lean on Bank 1. Are you sure you got Code 174? I don't see that code in my manuals. Maybe code 74, which is only a self test error code.

fat finger error

the codes are 172 173 which i was told its running lean and rich, which i could believe because sometimes its smells rich and black smoke. light only comes on after a few miles and sometimes it will go off and stay off for some time. also at idle it surges up and down

May be just a bad 02 sensor. Take a look at the outer housing on the 02 sensor & see if it is rusted/cracked on the outer housing. The 5.8l's we're known for that.

Disconnect the negative battery cable, replace the O2 sensor, re-connect the cable and you should be good to go.
