lightbar mounting

I want to build a custom light bar to mount to the area above the windshield
on my 96 bronco. I want to build one like the type found on prerunners and race trucks. My question is, how do I fasten the frame of the light bar to the sheetmetal? I will use flatplates to mount to the sheetmetal. I maybe able to use through bolts on the roof, but there are mounting locations I may not be able to use through bolts. I heard of "nutserts", but I can not seem to find any.
Anyone got ideas?

I have seen pics of this. When I get home I will see if I can find them.
