A guy near my job is selling a 1980 Bronco, 400CI rebult engine (about 3yrs ago), 4WD, 4 Speed tranny, bikini top, tow package, manual locking hubs, and is very clean inside and out...very clean. The only thing is it has a very slow power steering leak (I understand from reading here the power steering pump on these things are crap). Anyway, could the leak just be from the hose? Could this be an easy fix? Also, he is looking for 3000 OBO. Any ideas on what I should try to talk him down to? I know what blue book is but I want to be reasonable and not try to rob the guy. Need some help guys/gals. I'm checking it out on Tuesday and don't want to let it get away if it is a good deal.
Also, anything else I should look for when I check it out? I've never had a Bronco and am not familiar with them or the possible quirks. Thanks!
I'm not that fimillier with that year, but I wouldnt worry about the pump. It probubly is the hose. Even if it is the pump, thats not that big of a deal to replace.
If the pump is the only thing that is an issue, then I would ask to either see receipts on the engine rebuild or which shop did it to verify the rebuild. If he did it, then have it checked out at a shop. If all is ok, then I would hit him up about $2300. He will obviously balk at that, but may be willing to deal a little and you may get away with paying less than the $3000.
Well I decided to get the truck. It's not in bad shape at all. Few things need a little work, but what's a project truck without a little work...plus I managed to talk him down from the $3K. Be prepared for a lot of questions from this Bronco noob. I've never done anything other than standard maintenance so this should be an adventure. I'll get some pics up next week. Thanks!
Congradulations on the purchase of your Bronco. They all need a little work, so buy a Haynes manual and dig in. If you get stumped just ask, I'm sure someone else has had that problem also.
