Probe position

I am sure this is a dead horse, but for my peice of mind here it goes,
I was reading an article in one of these deisel mags this weekend about egt probe positions. Very confusing, I did a search on these boards a little confusing as well. Mine came on the truck when I bought it, the probe for the EGT gauge is in the exhaust manifold on the drivers side the tube closest to the driver about 3 to 4 inches from the top. Is this where most people have theres that have them pre turbo? Just making sure my temps are right.
The article showed pics of post turbo and pre but the pre was actually up on the pipe right before the turbo, this is where my question comes from.
Thanks for all the help.

Pre-turbo is to monitor your engine temp basically. Post turbo is to measure the exhaust temp after it has expanded energy on the turning of the turbo.

I have mine in the manifold pre-turbo. Just don';t exceed 1250 for any length of time.

The probe on the pipe that you are referring to is the clamp method. It's much easier than drilling into the exhaust manifold, but can be prone to leaks if not done correctly. I personally have mine in the up-pipe, but took extra care to make sure that it doesn't ever leak. So far no soot and no problems!

Either in the up-pipe or manifold will give you pretty much the same readings. It's the post-turbo readings that will really screw up.

Yes, (based on the ambient air pressure) and the temp is the temp that the parts are experiencining. Pyrometers don't care what altitude they are at.
