The first project is done! '90 aero have 2.4 TD of sprinter! Tommorow you will see photos! Runs well, faster then 2.3 with manual, but 3.0 with manual is faster. But 7 litrer per 100 km! on hightway! (over 30 MPG!).
cool Pablo,
how is the noise inside? what tranny?
i would have thought that tall long 5 cylinder MB diesel would not fit in such a small engine compartment
30 mpg plus is spectacular
now if Ford would get their engineers to put a diesel in a US van other than that monster E350 w the V8 diesel that sounds like a tank inside and coming down the road
see GM is building another car plant in St Petersburg Russia
Dodge and Freighliner are selling Sprinters like hotcakes with honey on them here....many going straight into customizing shops for $200,000 makeovers, college alumni rigs, vacation rigs...thousands being sold to service/delivery companies
Sound is not loud inside, it is more silently then inside Sprinter. The engine was modified (intake and oil pan), becouse it was too hight! But there is anougt space inside! Tranny - 5st manual (like in sprinter)!
that shifter begs for a Hurst T bar handle
now for stacked double turbos, a 4" exhaust and jake compression brake to scare the little kids and slow the beast down on hills
so how did engine tranny go in?
from bottom or through front with grill removed?
where is intercooler? no room?
Looks Excellent!!! Would a 3.0litre diesel from a 1980 Mercedes car be the same size? Is that 2.4 a 4cyl or a 5cyl? A driver for one of our customers has a 1980 Mercedes 300SD w/auto trans, and he cannot get it to run. He is talking about selling it just to get out of his garage. Only has 130,000 km on it and has been sitting for about 10 yrs.
I have been contemplating the idea but was unsure of the size of engine. My 3.0 sport does not seem to be very efficient so far only 20mpg, or 16.7 US. That is pretty bad in my books! A MB turbo diesel would be very cool if I could make it fit!
Got any photos inside the tiny doghouse?
It is 2.4 R4 Diesel. It is engine of short Sprinter, so there is only one turbo, on engine, passanger's side. Intercooller is under the radiator, on place of tranny cooler, electric fan is beyong the grill, so you can not see it from under the hood. You can see PS pump made by ZF, water pump, AC compressor, vaccum pump and tension rollers. There is a fuel filter (white) under the hood.
Oil pan was modified. It was to wide for aero, so 2 pises of metal were cutten out from sides, and pices of alluminium were welded in. The engine was taken in through front with grill removed, but with air intake removed. It was a real surprise, when we understood, that there is no room for intake, so engine ran without turbine and air filter. My friend had to cut pices from air intake to install it!
About the budget of the project:
Engine - $1300+PS pump+Vacc.pump + alternator
5St tranny by MB $500
Drive shaft modification $100

Ford in eurepe prefere to use Pegeout diesels. I want to try 2.3 TDI
68Mercury250Ranger! What is the engine from '80 Mercedes? OM 606? Give me a picture to identify it! Use of R6 cyl engine requires removing A/C and moving radiator to font!
Pablo-UA: I did a little research and it is a "OM 617.950" I guess that means it is a OM617 and the .950 is the version of that engine.
I have not seen it yet but am planning on this Saturday.
He has 2 cars #1 is a 1979 280 SE , it is under 100,000km and runs mint and has a perfect interior according to him! But the body is not roadworthy any more.
#2 is a 1980 300 SD , showing 13?,??? km but has a mint body and a leather interior but is very rough, he got it to do a powertrain swap, its been off the road for many years and he can't get it running.
As far as I can tell the 300 SD was only sold in North America from 1978 to 1980. It was the car that "JR" on the TV show "Dallas" drove in the 1980's. Just a tidbit of useless information I found on the WWW.
Sorry, forgot to put in the price, He is asking $1200 Canadian, but his wife wants them out of her driveway. Luckily I will never have that problem. My father got out of Pig farming about 12 years ago and I've been filling up the empty barns ever since!
