Was there a factory timing set on this beast the first time it broke. What are the odds an incorrect set could fit on any other motor than what it was original specified to. I've had to screw with the fuel cam when putting a 289 cam in a 302 or vice versa but never had any problem with cam end play. O'death, can you shim the cam gear away from the thrust plate? If so, how would you measure the clearance? Can thrust plate thicknesses have changed over the model years? Did the motor loosen up when you loosened the thrust plate or the cam gear? If it's the thrust plate, then the cam is binding on the thrust plate. If it's the cam gear bolt, then it's the cam gear binding on the thrust plate. This is important, please clarify.

I called Car Quest and asked them what the book said about this timing chain and gear set. Turns out that in 72, they have "early" and "late" versions. I had purchased the "late" as my truck was manfd. in sept. of 72, Well, it turns out that the prev. owner put a early 72 motor in the truck.
It was my fault for not measuring the new sprocket, but y'know, I was excited. So there was a spacer CAST into the sprocket, about 3/16 of an inch....
accounting for the bind up...
I have not put it all back together, but it looks good. so I'll let you all know. Thanks a million
That was the problem. The wrong gear set, it was too thick.
I made the big mistake, I didn't comletely check out my new parts. TO the naked eye, it was exact, but measured, it was about 1/8 or 1/4 inch off. And what a difference it makes. My 1972 Green and white f100 runs like a charm.
