My 2008 F150 5.4l SCrew wouldn't start this evening.
The engine turns over and the starter engages, but it won't fire.
Oddly enough the starter stays engaged after I take my hand off the ignition!
I have to physically turn the key off for it to quit (didn't want to burn out the starter).
The culprit may be the wet weather....it's been a lot milder today and we've had some freezing rain that turned to drizzle.
My truck has only done this once before (last year I think). I eventually got it to start tho.
Well it started right up this morning no problem at all!
Likely just the dampness...still curious about the starter staying engaged while letting off the key....
My '07 keeps spinning after the key is let go of as well. I start it that way every day. Just click it forward and let go, haha. Your issue sounds like it is probably a fuel pump driver module that is starting to die.
Many thanks for the advise Lariat.
Greatly appreciated!
The problem did seem that it wasn't getting fuel.
I checked out a video on youtube and I believe you're right.
An easy check and an easy fix by the looks of things.
As for the starter....the momentary ignition switch didn't come back after letting go...I wasn't even touching the switch and the engine was still trying to turn over..definitely not normal. It should have returned back to the "accessory" point.
My ignition after I let go of the key, the starter always keeps spinning on mine, even though I'm not holding it in the "start" position. I'm guessing it is computer controlled. The starter never fails to disengage once the engine starts. It's the only one of its kind I've ever seen. Though, I have gotten used to it now which I never hold the key anymore. Just click and done. My friends '04 does it as well.
Replaced my fuel pump driver module yesterday! Happy Easter!
Bought the Dorman part on Amazon and picked it up in the States....price was $56 US about 1/2 that of $CDN, and even with the exchange rate I still came out ahead.
The module was absolutely toast! Surprised the truck ran at all!
As mentioned in other posts, the hardest part was removing the lock mechanism for the spare tire...wow! Finally came loose after soaking with WD40.
As for the starter issue, apparently all Fords do that!! News to me! Oh well...glad that's out of the way.
I totally get the confusion on the starter issue....
I was shocked to have the starter still engaged and the engine turning over while I sat there waiting for the engine to come to life.
Normal (I use the term lightly) startup would be thus:
1) Turn the key to engage the starter.
2) The engine cranks over.
3) If the engine starts, I let go of the key.
4) If the engine fails to start, I let go of the key (so as not to burn out the starter). The starter stops spinning. The engine stops cranking.
Ford's way:
4) If the engine fails to start, I let go of the key. The starter stays spinning and the engine continues to crank. This happens until the engine fires.
Then the starter disengages and stops spinning.
Not sure if this is F150 only or a part of Ford's overall strategy.
Hope this helps, but I think 07F150Lariat5.4 summed it up better.
my '07 starter works the same way. i have an intermittent strange start when the engine has been at operating temp and has cooled down for just a little bit, where the engine will stumble when starting, and the starter will keep turning until the engine fully starts, even if i've let off the key.
That's right. This is not a 'Ford thing' by design but perhaps has become a Ford thing because of the switch or relay. It definitely is not normal or benign for this to happen. Anytime the starter does not immediately stop and the drive gear retract when you release the key, you should fix it ASAP.
One point not clear is: does the key snap back from the "start" position to the "run" or "on" position when you let go after engine starts or you let go while cranking?
I never heard of this [starter] thing. Seems wrong to me...a way for the starter motor to overheat. Sounds more like;
a. The ignition switch is sticking in the "start" position.
b. The starter relay is stuck on (I don't know if they can stick "on" or not).
on mine the starter automatically disengages as soon as the engine starts.. i have never had it still be turning with the engine running.

^^^ Same as above. It will spring back, but will still keep spinning on mine as well. As soon as it starts, it disengages. Never does stay locked in. Never a problem with it.
