Am original owner of '76 Bronco with C4 that is working perfectly. However, has been leaking trans fluid for past few months. After 30 years really can't complain. Truck has seen only low duty mileage and never abused so am sure internals are fine.
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to replace main seals without tearing the transmission apart. I know it will have to be removed from truck.
You can replace the input/ pump seal. There is a seal between the transmission and transfer case which you would need to remove the transfer case to change. If the shift shaft seal is leaking, the pan would need to be removed. Its been a while since I've had one apart, so I can't remember if the valve body needs to be removed or if there is just a clip that needs to come off to allow the shaft to come out.
If it's like mine, it would be the seal between the transmission and the transfer case. I had it replaced a couple of years ago and it started leaking again probably because I let the old Bronco sit alot. Now, when I get ready to drive it, I add a quart of Type F and take off.
the seal might be leaking because it's dry and also because the pump /convertor bushing is washed out i would reseal the trans and rebuils the pump as most likly the bushing is gone. www.levelten.com we can help you out with all the parts you may need as we have them in stock at all times .
