a buddy has a 86 Bronco, 4 wheel drive, auto. Had a 302 fuel injected, but swapped to 351 winsor w/ carb. New engine last year. His rear end went out on him and he doesn't have a clue what to look for. What is the most likely rear end in his Bronc. What gear ratio and spline count? He offered to sell as is for 800 at one time but when i asked tonight he said he wanted to look for a rearend. He just put on new wheels and 31 inch tires before his misfortune. Just trying to help him out if anyone could reply. thanks in advance.
yea that year would be an 8.8 with 3.55 gears. he can look all the way up to 96 from a bronco or f150 and be a direct bolt in. a 9" swap is also just as easy and the brake hardware from his old rear end will transfer right over ( i did this awhile back). the 9" will more then likely have a 3.50 gear but that wont matter because its still close enough to the front being 3.54
bummer he went carb on the 5.8. he could have stayed efi being it started out that way. I have an 85 with a 302 efi that will be getting my rolled broncos 95 efi 5.8. its an easy swap to say the least.
my 85 also has an 8.8 out back so i am torn on which to use either the 9" out of the rolled bronco or the 8.8. either one will need setup with gears due to the 35's i have.
I ran my 88' with 35's for years with 3.55's. Than changed to 4.56's. Lots better. The problem is I kept going through axles. (shafts) The axles didnt break, they just would get eaten up at the wheel bearing. I put a full float axle kit in and never had a problem again. Now I run 38's (with the same kit) and still no problem. The 9" doesnt have that problem to begin with. (The bearings can go, but they dont take out the shaft)
Thanks for all the info. Been looking around the local wrecking yards. found 8.8's and 9's. Prices vary from 200.00 to 400.00. friend wants to upgrade to 9". New project for us. he asked for help in swapping the rearends. If we need help, i'll be sure to ask. Thanks.
