Which one is it?

OK, that's it. My Haynes manual is going in the trash!! I've been trying to figure out some things on my 99 2.5 Ranger now for 2 days. The Haynes has been more of a research project than a shop help.

I now want to replace my ECT which I believe is sending wrong information, but don't know which one to replace. The manual says there are two. One on the back of the engine just under the head. Nothing there. But, a photo I found pertaining to the thermostat housing shows what looks like one on the T/stat housing. The book says I have 2 sending units. One for the gague, one for the computer. Well, I have what appears to be 2 of them mounted on my T/stat housing. Again, no information in the Haynes. Both have 2 wires. Which is which? I'll probably just go for both of them since at this point I'm flying blind, but I'd sure like to know which controls what. I've been in and out of here trying to find information on this forum so much that I now have to clean my computer keys. Help!

I think the ECT and the IAT look similar on the 4-banger and could be confusing you.

The ECT is the one with the GY/R wire and LG/R wire.

Well, the following is kinda low tech, but you could warm the engine up, turn it off, then return the ugnition key to "run", but don't restart the engine, then disconnect the sender lead that makes the temp gauge move, by that you'll know which one operates the temp gauge, so the other one is likely for the computer.

Just a low tech thought.

Well, that makes perfect sense to me. Should have thought of that myself. My mind's running in high (tech) mode trying to figure this stuff out.

Earlier engines had the ECT in the lower intake manifold center next to the head. I don't know what year, but it was moved to the front water outlet. The temp sender is in the block on the drivers side to the rear. It is under the intake manifold. It is easier to see from under the truck. There are two sensors in that area. The upper one in the cylinder head is the oil pressure switch. jim d
