My buddy has a 86 F250 w/ the 6.9 and we tried to replace the ignition switch so it would have accessories and start position and also be able to remove the key. The switch itself is new and is fine but the part in the steering column that connects to the lock is faulty. How is this replaced?
The PO just put a push button on the dash to start it and the switch wont go to acc or release the key.
Any tips on dissassembling the steering column to get to the ignition would be helpful.
is the lock cylender broke? or is it the ingition actulator arm thats broke, its the cheep pos that connects the rod from the ingition switch to the lock cylender. i have replaced it on tilt columns a few times. i am trying to rember i may miss a step
1 pull steering wheel off
2 remove trun signal switch
3 remove lock cylinder
4 remove snap ring from steering shaft its right under the turn switch
5 pull tilt column pins. its the right and left pivet pints. i think i used a #8 mechine screw to pull them out, watch the tilt springs there is a bit of force on them
6 remove top of the column and broken actulator arm
reassemble in reverse order.
things to note
its a real pain getting the tilt springs back in.
you may not have to pull the lock cylender
the ingition rod actulator is driven by a small gear track that is driven by a small gear thats triven by the lock cylender. if the gear track is set too far in or out, you will not have full range of the ingition swtich and you may crack the gear track
Thanks, I will try a stab at it.
Also, does anyone know if there is a way to tighten up the tilt wheel? Mine is a little wobbly after all the years and it will occasionally pop out of the middle adjustment.
