I am working on my 68 Ranger with a 240-6. My Dad gave me the truck, and it needs its work for sure. I am trying to get it running first. The engine is a fairly new rebuild, in fact. However, my brother :-X11 tinkered with the distributor, and got the timing way out of whack. I am trying to align the rotor, but my manual is not clear as to what direction to set it at TDC. I searched the boards and could not find this info. On my old gm v-8, I set rotor to point to no1 cylinder. My manual says, to point rotor to no1 location in dizzy cap. Also, just for assurance, the contact portion of rotor button is considered the front of the button, right? Pardon the ignorance, just haven't done much work on inliners. One last question, in everyone's opinion, what would be the best performance upgrade for the buck? I want to keep the 6 since its fresh, its got a new radiator, and such. Thanks in advance.
To Make absolute sure that the engine is timed correctly,Have the engine set at TDC *Just before the power stroke*.
Then, make sure the rotor is set toward the #1 postion on the Dist. cap.
Turning the distributor while setting the timing with the engine running with a timing light will give the engine Perfect Timing.
Do you have a timing light to use while you're doing this?
4cyl,6 cyl,8 cyl,10cyl> Doesn't matter they all get set this way.
