Hey found this cool page on the web. Probably belongs to someone here oh well thought everyone might enjoy the info. Great starting point for people new to the FE's
Hey also forgot to ask. The suplier that I have found to purchase my engine from lists several 390's from cars with 4V those are as follows
390 4v 64-65
390 4v 66
390 4v 67-68
Because these are listed as different motors I'm left to ask what were the differences in these model years? and Which offers the best or most desirable characteristics? The also list the 390's in sevreal year 'ranges' for trucks however It's my understanding from earlier posts that the car motors had the 9:1 compression ratio which would be more desirable. As well these are listed as 4v motors so I am assuming these had different or better heads?
Tongie, the FE series had a few changes as it was produced. The motor mount changes in 1965, the later blocks have four holes and can be used in early or late applications. The thrust bearing grew a little larger in diameter in 1965. The heads changed port size in 66 (?) but they are fairly interchangable. 2V and 4V engines usually had the same heads but the pistons were a little differant. The 4v engines ( and the 2V premium fuel ) got a piston with a slightly smaller dish. Many of the later trucks came with leftover 410 mercury pistons for very low compression. If I were going to build a 390 for a truck I would use the 66-70 car style pistons to get 9 or 9.5 to 1. Something like a silvolite 1130. If I could time warp back to 1969 and get some sunoco 260, the silvolite 1131 has a flat top and will give 10 to 1 in a 390. This same piston will give you 8 to 1 in a 360. Silvolite also makes, and most people use, the 1139 piston, which is a replacement for the low compression truck engines. It will give you 7.75 to 1 (I wouldn't use that one.....). DF
