Which air springs?

its a 99 F250 PSD will be hauling a 12 foot cabover camper. The truck has a homemade 5th wheel hitch (ball is cut out but crossmember is still there.)

Firestone has two diffrent skus
2330 for $256
and
2071 for $240

or air lift
57291 for $233

Or what about these timberns

Timbren SES Kit - Rear
SKU: FR150SDE
$154.95

I have only used Firestone airbags - they worked well

I have had the Firestone bags on my truck since 2000 and they still work great. Airlift ones are probably fine also - I've never heard anyone complain about them. The Timbren springs seem like a more durable system with no air lines to crush or leak, but you don't have the adjustability of air springs.

One really important thing to do is to make sure you do not plumb both your airbags to a single shrader valve. Doing that makes it easier to add air, but the big problem is that when the truck takes a turn, the air will rush from one bag to the other and therefore the bags provide no sway dampening.

Speaking of sway, one of the best things I did for my truck for hauling my 12 foot camper was to add Rancho RS9000 shocks. When I load the camper, I crank the rear shocks up to max dampening and it makes a major difference in the amount of sway.

A word of caution with your setup: a 12 foot camper can weigh a LOT and easily overload your rear tires (and that's after already going way over your GVWR). So try to keep extra weight to a minimum, keep speed down for less tire flexing/heating and make absolutely sure you have the highest weight rated E rated tires available installed and aired up to max pressure.

You can get a lot of good info from the slide-in camper forum over at www.irv2.com .

Use the Firestones... I have used quite a few sets of the Airlifts in the past, and still will if the application does not have the room for the slightly larger diameter of the Firestones. The Firestone bags are very good quality, they use the same Firestone manufacturing techniques for the actuator bags on railroad car airbrakes, some of them are even the identical part #'s. You won't see any Airlift bags in that kind of application!!

I have the Air Lifts bags in both of my trucks and have had no problem with them. also have a compressor in my DRW truck and I like being able to adjust for the load in the truck.

good point on the tires Harald I currently have some C range tires on that are bald, seems like a good time to upgrade.

The kit comes with everything you need, including 2 shrader valves. I only mentioned not T'ing off one valve for both bags because I've heard of people doing it.

I just installed a set of Air Lift #57212 and Smart Air #25415. These are wonderful. I had a set of Air Lift on my last truck and would use nothing but Air Lift. I add the Smart Air so whenever I add weight or loose weight the truck has the right ride height. Did I mention the $25.00 rebate and limited lifetime warranty for as long as I own this truck. Great deal until July 31.

Question

Is there any advantage to having air bags in the front as well as the rear? I haul a 40' trailer with my F350 DRW PS.

Thumbs up Great Site

Greetings fellow Ford lovers, I have a small fleet of trucks that haul both expedited freight and Hotshot. Most my trucks are Fords with the exception of a couple Freightliners, all are diesels. Wouldn't have it any other way. I stumbled on this site, looking for some spec data for a 1996 F750, and became enamored by the amount of info available. This is an excellent site for we gearheads, keep up the great work, and thanks for inviting me in!

I installed the Firestones on my F350. Easy kit to install and they easily level the the truck with my slide in camper installed.

In your situation no. It would only be if you wheel, and you also want it to fit in underground car parks...
