wedge air brakes
#3
On wedge brakes the air can is attached directly to the backing plate.
On S cam braked the air can rod has a clevis on the end the is attached to an arm, the slack adjuster, that in turn is attached the the shaft of the a cam.
The easy way is the look at the orientation of the air cans on a current truck and compare it to your truck. Modern trucks use S cam brakes. Wedge brakes were phased out in the early 80's

They still had wedge brakes for the front axles on L series in 1990. They are bad news especially now, the parts are lots of $$$$.
I have a 1990 LT-9000 with the 16000 lb axle. I have another axle and steering gear components with Meritor Q S cam brakes to install. This axle and components are from a 1993 LT8000 with a 16000 lb axle. It's a big job to change the parts but I'll be rid of the wedge brakes and have a good axle with good king pins.
